I was browsing around on eBay and I came across this hand strap. Wondering if anyone has used one like this and what they thought of it. Looks like there'd be less a chance of dropping the camera with something like this.

Hakuba makes that exact same strap, and others here seem to love them.
Not sure if that is the same manufacturer or not...

I can not say enough about my hand strap. It has helped me to hold long lens better and I credit for an increase in quality as well. Not just so one does not drop the camera, this can, at least for me, help me take better pictures.

Okay, dumb question: Will that strap work for other model Canons, say the 300D or XT, as well?

I'd like one for my 20D, too, but I've only ever seen them used with the accessory battery grip attached--and I don't have any use for the grip at present. I don't know if they can even be used without the grip--anyone know any better?

regards,
Terry

I have this model (as far as I can judge from the pic) and it's well worth the price. Not evident to install at first glance because of it's three-points attachment system (supposed to be envelopping the back of the hand?) but I use 2 points out of the three and feel very comfortable with it.

Works without or in combination with the BG-E2 grip. The screw mounting plate (to fit the body bottom) is fitted with a slider which allows mounting on any type of body, Canon or whatso ever. And the opening of the battery door without unscrewing everything. And the hand piece is real leather! :D

For a handful of bucks, an accessory I wouln'd live without : safer than just pinching the camera (and the costly lenses), handy (don't have to think of it), and really spares a lot of pain when shooting for a long period of time. ;)

Thanks, Pierrot--sounds exactly what I'm looking for!

I bought the one made by Canon that sells for 22.95 from B&H. It has a single strap that loops through the the leather pad, the attachment on the bottom of my MK II, and the strap attachment at the top. I haven't even attached it yet, but looks like it may prevent you from using the neck strap at the same time. The description at B&H also said it will only fit on cameras with the built-in or attached battery grip.

After looking at it, it seems this kind of hand strap would be better if it were designed with a quick disconnect and allow for the neck strap to be attached at the same time.

Here's a link to the one I bought

The Canon hand strap does allow you to attach a neck strap to it. Many of the aftermarket neck straps have quck disconnects on them that leave short stubs on both sides of the camera body.

To the best of my knowlege, the Canon hand strap will only work on -=series bodies or smaller bodies that have the battery grip installed.

Okay, where do you find these hand straps, ebay??

As belmondo posted.
You can use the neck and hand strap together. It only fits on the 1 Series and cameras with a battery grip.

I use one on my 20D and I love it :)

The Canon hand strap is nice, but requires the grip. It won't work with the bare camera and I don't have a need for the grip. THe Hakuba and most others require you to attach a plate to the tripod mount. I have my RRS, Arca-style QR plate permanently attached there, so that's out of the question for me as well.

I do like the idea of a hand strap, but I find the current avaiable alternatives to be impractical for me. Oh well...

There is another solution to use the Canon hand strap on the 20D/10D without using the grip.

Check out: http://www.camdapter.com

QR plate can be mounted on top of the hand strap plate.

Yeah, and I'm sure THAT makes for a really stable tripod mount.:rolleyes::rolleyes: I don't think so, but thanks for the thought. :)

I wonder if the grip on my 10s willl fit on the 20D, they're about the same size. I'm going to try that when I get home.

You can purchase a Camdapter that will fit in Arca Swiss style clamps. That way you get to use tour handstrap and have the QR capability!

I have a question for those of you using the handstrap...I bought one and was sure I'd like it with my 300D/grip. But I tried it and couldn't use it. It restricted the motion of my hand to where I had difficulty accessing all the different buttons on the back and top. Especially when you have to press one button and rotate the selection wheel simultaneously. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem or how they get around it. If I loosen the strap enough to give me free range of motion, then it kind of defeats the purpose of having it.

I have the ebay kind and don't like them...but I ordered 2 straps from the forum here and if you disconnect the strap on each end...then connect the 2 short ends...you have a great hand strap.....I use the camera that way when I'm working....don

I found this to be a problem so reduced the tension of the strap a little. It's still a bit tricky moving the dial by the shutter to change aperture etc but I'd still rather have the strap :)

Well, you're right, however you can remove the plate on the bottom of the Hakuba strap and run it through the metal bar on the bottom of the BG-E3 battery grip (on the Rebel XT, for example), so the QR plate mounts directly to the tripod mount on the bottom of the BG-E3. I suppose the 20D is the same?

I have one and it's a great tool. I do avian photography and it helps me to hold my 20D a little more steady. I have not regretted getting it, and I think it's a great idea! I highly recommend it.

Yes, you can buy tham at Ritz camera for about $20. I don't have the grip with my 20D and it works perfectly.
