View Full Version : Some nice 6th Gear Experience Cars

I went to Elvington Airfield this weekend, they had a War Weekend on with restored Tanks; Jeeps; Armoured Cars etc and people wearing period clothes. Got a little bored after a while and had a few hours to kill before the scheduled Battle of Britain Memorial fly past (which disappointingly turned out to be just a single Spitfire) I decided to find out where all the high revving engine and brake screeching sounds were coming from. I walked down the car park to a sectioned off part (presumably part of the old runway system) and found some very nice cars flying round a coned track. It turns out that there is a business in the old Elvington Aerodrome called 6th Gear Experience that for a fee (quite a large fee) will let you fly round the track in the Supercar of your choice. Any way here are some of the shots I got, couldn't get in close so all taken with 300 mm f4 L IS. Taken at lower shutter speeds to try and capture some movement so not the sharpest you'll ever see as my panning technique isn't the best.

Nice ones, but did you take any pics of the war period as a friend of mine was dressed up in WW2 gear.

Yep! I took quite a few like this one, shame about the barbed wire. I'll try to get a few together and post them, but I've got a few plane shots to sort out first from Manchester Airport; including Concorde in it's new home.

I'd gladly die to drive #3 with some hardcore spirit! ;)

Nice shots! I like the light on the M3, but I have to chuckle because the couple inside seem pretty disinterested. Maybe the driver is concentrating, but his passenger...
Great cars, do you mind me asking what the fee was, out of sheer curiosity?

I don't know just how much it would cost to drive round in one of these cars but on their Web site the gift vouchers start at £50.00, I would imagine for that all you'll get to do is sit in the seat and play with the steering wheel :D
Have a look on their site

There were two Diablos going round the course, the orange one pictured here and a pearlescent white one. I thought out of all the cars there that those two were the most characterless, I don't like the shape and the car as a whole seems quite bland; I don't suppose it helped their kudos that they were being driven around the track very sedately.

Yeah, awesome piece of kit. The cheapest car shown above but with 0-60 in under 3 seconds it would show them all a clean pair of heels (at least up to 100mph).
£99 for a 4 lap blast according to the website :D

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd point out that the orange 'Diablo' above, is in fact a Murcielago.

Maybe, but it's still Yucky Orange ;)

some look a little soft and i think the HDR is applied to heavily.

Is it just me or are the number plates added in PP? They look quite wonky, especially in the Murcielago and R8 shots.

They weren't added by me I can assure you, I don't know how they get the cars to the venue but if they drive them there presumably they swap over the plates when they get there.

I think my original posting (did you read it?) explains the softness of them, I did a bit of PP on them to try and make them pop a little more but they're not HDR's. Thanks for taking the time to comment anyway.

p.s The pearlescent white one was also a Murci. I know you haven't posted a photo of it, but I know the owners, and it features quite a lot in a Youtube video of a LCUK event a couple of years ago.

You mean this one, I notice a few differences between them i.e. the vent in front of the rear wheels and the lower front grills/spoiler. Are they slightly different models or is it just a face lift on one of them like the Cortina Mark IV and Mark V

I wish there was something like that in my area. http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Sad/sad-007.gif
Great shots btw. Where was your focus point? They do look a little soft.

As I said in my original posting (and again later in the thread) I was using quite a slow shutter speed to try and capture a feeling of motion i.e. I wanted the wheels to look like they were rotating. My panning is useless so yes! they came out a little soft looking :(
