This topic may have appeared somewhere before but for those relatively new to digital cameras, I thought I'd mention what a pleasant surprise I had recently when I put one of my backup data CDs into a Panasonic DVD-S27 (DVD player) which we recently bought. I have been copying the folders and image titles given by the Canon A70 and S1-IS directly to CDs without changing any names, as a quick backup to protect against a possible HDD malfunction. It turns out that, when putting any of my backup CDs into the DVD player, it automatically sets up a menu system with folders on the left and individual images on the right. I can use the DVD remote to pick and choose which folder I want to see, then sit back and let the DVD automatically play the pictures in sequence. Or just leave it alone and it shows every picture on the CD. I hadn't tried this before so it was a pleasant surprise, and the clarity on our TV with the S-video connection is amazingly crisp and clear.

I'm sure there are better options out there with more bells and whistles but for me this has been a very nice breakthrough; it's nice sometimes rather than sit at the computer screen, to just to lie on the bed or sofa and watch the photos flash on screen and it's a nice way to share photos with other family members. Can anybody else add enlightenment to this? I've only been into digital photography since late 2003.

I will say that is unusual.DVD players widely differ in how they treat jpg images. One of my DVD players will load any jpg it finds on a cd (although it loads them very slowly). This DVD player will not play "video CDs." My other DVD player will play "Video CDs" rather well but will not recognize jpgs unless formatted in v"Video CD" format. I had another DVD player which would not play any jps at all.

It's not that unusual in newer DVD players. Capabilities of various JPG-compatible players will vary, including max. magnification, zoom controls, control of the nature of the slide show, etc.
