Hello All. :)
This is my first post here. My name is Johan and I am in Pretoria, South Africa.
I bought my first digital (350D) yesterday and picked up a second hand (good condition) 420 EX. There was no manual, but it seemed obvious at the time to pick one up from the net. Yeah. Not so easy eh? I discovered an old topic in this community for the english manual, but the link does not seem to work? There is a German link that works, but alas, I can not read German. I actually found another link where somebody scanned the manual and placed it in a PDF - but the quality is really bad.....
Does anybody here have a Manual for the 420EX please?
And another question, can one do a long exposure (20 seconds maybe) with the 350Dand have multiple flash bursts lets say 1 second apart?
Thanx

Hi, Johan. Welcome to the forum. Here's a link to the 420EX manual:

As for the multi flash capability with the 420EX, I'm afraid the 420EX does not have that function. The 420EX is a pretty basic flash and only works in automatic mode.

Thanx for the responce. Yes, that is the manual I foud and printed - but it is exhausting on them eyes to read!
I can not believe that there is no English version to be found!
Thanx for your trouble anyway!

Yes, they are a little lacking in contrast, aren't they. Unfortunately, there are no official PDF files that Canon has made available to the general public for the 420EX. or for any other flash for that matter.
The 420EX is really very basic and there really isn't much that you can't figure out intuitively just by looking at the controls on the flash. It has the high-speed sync which you set by flipping the high-speed sync switch to the H with the lightning symbol. It also has a modeling light which you activate by setting the flash to Slave mode (the switch at teh foot of the flash). And that's about it. You won't have to worry about the wireless remote stuff (Group and Channel) because they're only usable if you have a master flash (the 420EX can not be a master).
The other functions, such as FEC and 2nd curtain has to be set in the camera since the 420EX does allow these to be set via the flash.

Oh... I thought that I might have some more control over the flash, but it is a pretty decent flash as far as I can tell.
Thanx for all your help!
Do you know of any good places one can expand on your composition skills?

I'm new here and guess what, a forum with a serach function that actually works is a forum I'll enjoy! :)
*THIS* was exactly what I was looking for. A manual I could read (got mine in German).
I guess I should say hello or something too... Hello! I'm new (from Sweden). :)

.exe files?? Hmmmm.... I'm using a Mac, to me .exe files is as useful as the Teleconverter for my Coolpix 995 on my new Canon.
But that scanned manual works ok... just looks odd printed, but I have eye-sight as an eagle :D

I checked that site, it has 3 links:
220 EX with the file Speedlite_220EX.exe (572KB)
420 EX with the file 3485_Speedlite420_DEU.exe (6.116KB)
550 EX with the file speedlite_550_ex_eng.exe (6.224KB)
The middle one is for the 420 obviously, but that file is in German (also as indicated by "_DEU ")
Am I missing something here perhaps?
Thanx for your time!

I set up a poll to see how many would take an english manual if I create it.

Hey Bobjim! Thanx for the offer, but I actually did get the scanned version in better quality. Thanx!
But, hold on to that - there is bound to be somebody looking for it sooner than later!
Enjoy the weekend!
