View Full Version : A wacky macro idea, advice needed

Hello y'all, I'm kind of new here, and want to run an idea by everyone.

I've been thinking of using a reversed lens for macro work and am pondering this configuration:

1. Canon 50D
2. Canon 70-200 F/4L on the camera
3. Male to male filter adapter from Kirk (http://www.kirkphoto.com/polarizers.html) adapter S-14
4. Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L (Tilt Shift)

This configuration was arrived at by the limitations of the sizes of the kirk adapters. I have 2 concerns (and there're probably other issues I haven't thought of). 1) The TS-E 24 is HEAVY and it would be all the way on the other size of the relatively dainty 70-200 F/4. I'd hate to break something! 2) How close focusing would this be? I'm afraid that 24mm is too wide. Or would this be somehow compensatable by the zoom?

Thanks, all.

Regards,
David

If you're using a tilt-shift lens in order to extend your DoF while shooting macro, it's probably not going to work - as far as I know, the "tilting" of the projected image has to take place immediately before hitting the focal place - all you'll get by attempting to reverse-mount a TS-E lens on the end of a 70-200 F4 is some lopsided vignetting (and a needlessly empty wallet).

I did wonder that... I already own these 2 lenses, so the only thing I'd have to buy is the Kirk adapter. I'd rather use the 50mm 1.8 on the end of the zoom, but Kirk doesn't have an adapter that permits that.

Not sure what size you need but it's quite common to get a male/male reversing ring with the wrong filter size on one side and then use a filter step up/step down ring to get the size correct.

Yeah, I just figured that out. I could get the male to male I mentioned above and then get a step-up ring (which, since it's backwards, steps down) to 52mm so that I can use my 50mm 1.8. Although I'm not convinced that I couldn't use the tilt-shift to get a more desirable plane of focus...

And, by the way, your macro pics are da bomb.

Interesting concept, I am not sure what effect the tilt will have.

The effect of normal tilt is greatly reduced at magnification anyway. (take a look at http://www.zen20934.zen.co.uk/photography/tiltshift.htm#Close Up)

My instinct is it will do something but I haven't sat down and worked out the geometry, let us know how you get on.

PS If I had a T&S lens I don't think I would treat it this way.

here is my kinda out there rig I cobbled together:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=669219

The setup using a 24-60mm reversed on a 180mm macro gives me up to a 7.5:1 shot...to get the most out of the setup put the shorter lens on the end.

I am gonna post an actual shot of the setup maybe tomorrow:
