I believe the camera has an auto-shutoff. Mine turns off after 60 seconds. To turn it back on, all I need to do it slightly depress the shutter release.
Take the battery out? No, if that's the case, it sounds like the camera may have issues...

I set mine to turn off after 4 minutes. As Steve said, I just need to half-press the shutter release button to turn it back on. If yours is not the case, then get an exchange if possible. IMHO, exchange is better then repair. Good luck.

Never heard of this problem. Err 99 is a common issue (and covers a lot of ground), but simply shut-off and freeze afterwards...
My advise would be to format the CF, up-date the firmware and see how it goes (it's easy don't be afraid to do it).
Here's the link: http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/eosdigital/E3kr_firmware-e.html
If the problem continues then you may experiment to take off the small date/ time battery (located also in the "big" batery compartment on the upper side) for about 60s with lens, battery and CF off. You'll have to re-program the date and hour and general settings.
If this doesn't do it, you should write to Canon or go to a local representation.
They probably will tell you to send it in, took 5 weeks in my Err 99 case, but your problem seems very different.
Good luck.

I have had similar issues with mine, except mine switches off ANY time it chooses and will NOT come back until I take the battery out & replace it. I was planning on sending it in for repair/replacement after I returned from my trip to the Lake District, but ended up dropping the camera & scratching the back of it pretty badly, so I'm now concerned that they will think the problem came from me dropping it!!
Grrr!!
