So I've wondered this ever since joining. When sending/recieving private messages, what is the whole read reciept thing for? A bit confused...

I believe if it is selected it sends you a confirmation PM when the original PM is read.

If you are sending a very important PM to someone (they are all important, aren't they?:)) you can request a receipt that the person has read the PM. Now the receiver has to click on "Send confirmation Receipt" in order for this to work. If you want to check if they have indeed clicked and acknowledged receipt, then go to you Private Messages and at the very top of the page you will see "Folder Controls" At the bottom of this box is "You have X confirmed and X unconfirmed private message receipts". Click on this line and you will see all the receipts, confirmed or not.

The way the Read Receipt works should be changed.
When you send a private message, you are asked if you would like to send a read receipt, and given the option of YES or CANCEL.
THis makes most people think if you hit CANCEL, your message is cancelled too. I thought this initially, and I bet almost everybody else does too because 100% of the private messages I get request a read receipt.
Pekka, please look into changing this.

Actually it should all be done in the background with no choice by the sender on using it or not. You send a message and the system tells you when it has been read, and you can quit wondering then if it has ever been read and can think about something else instead of: I wonder if they have read that message I sent them yet.
I use a program called MSGTAG with Eudora that tells me whenever someone opens a message I have sent them. It runs in the background automatically. Handy little program.

I still say, lets get RID of the read reciept, or do what MRCHevy suggests and make it automatic.
I always cancel RR's when I send a PM, but I think MOST people think if you hit cancel, you also cancel the PM you've just written.
I've been doing alot of correspondence via PM lately, and EVERYBODY is asking for read reciepts, and I am getting sick of hitting OK that extra time, each and every time I get a PM.
Please, can something be done about this?
