Robsonikus,

welcome to the forum.

It is easy to say that there are definitely more people on this forum who had problems with the Tamron 28-75/2.8 than with the Canon 24-70/2.8. Still, considering the price difference, this is not much of a miracle. However, you whould also keep in mind that - in case the lens *really* had a problem - it normally was exchanged swiftly.

I am pretty happy with my Tamron 28-75/2.8. It is not as sharp as my 50/1.8, so I rather use it at f/4.0 than at f/2.8 normally. This way I get pictures that are sharp when viewed at 100% crop. So for normal 8x10 prints, 2.8 should definitely be usable as well.

I have heard that there are people whose lenses are sharper at f/2.8, but for me it was not a difference big enough so I would go back to the seller and make a big fuss about for a 350$ lens. Still, there are people who would do this.

Best regards,
Andy

Rob...: Welcome. This gets asked about twice daily. Search the posts. IMO, the 24-70 is special purpose medium tele zoom for PJ or event photography (like weddings). I put my recent experiences with it here:

Hi rob,

welcome to he forum. if you can afford the L, then go for it. But if cost is an issue for you, then the tamron is more than adequate. The biggest differences between the lenses are price (duh!), build quality and AF speed. The tamron AF is slower and seems to search a little more in low-light conditions. All that said, I am extremely happy with my Tamron and it stays on my camera 95% of the time. My purposes, though, are not as "AF speed-critical" as yours might be with PJ style shooting at weddings, so if that's important to you, might be better off than the L.

Good luck!
