Hi,

I just received my shiny new 300 f4 L IS and everything appears sharp, with no front or back focusing issues.

The only other IS Lens I have ever owned was the Canon 28-135.I do not recall as much noise as I am hearing and just want to make sure all is well before my right to return expires. With IS engaged I get a light whirring sound along with some light clicking and the occasional clunk. All relatively quiet but I just wanted to verify some noise from the IS on this lens is normal.

I have to add this thing is AMAZING even hand held I am getting beutiful shots (even with the 1.4 Tcon attached) and lovely contrast! What a lens, can't wait to use it in the field.

Cheers,
Darrin

Darrin,
The 300 f/4 IS is noisy. Mine scared me the first time I used it.:):) You get all sorts of neat whirling sounds out of it with the IS turned on.

Yep, it's normal. My 300/4L IS clunks away too. But my 70-200/2.8L IS does not. The 300mm seems to be able to compensate for more movement, but is definitely not as smooth. I was planning on doing a side-by-side comparison of the 300/4L IS vs the 70-200/2.8L IS + 1.4x extender this weekend, as well as the 300/4L + 1.4x vs 70-200/2.8L IS + 2x extender, to decide if it's worth me keeping the 300 or not.

definetly do that... Then ppullllllllllllllllllllllease pm me the link ...
I would love to see the images.
I can see the difference with my 70-200 f4L and 1.5x , but then my extender is an old kenko.. about 4 years old.
