I was just hoping to get some good tips on taking family shots and group photos. I want to be able to take the sharpest shots I can and want to know what tricks other photographers use to ensure that everyone is in complete focus. Your help would be much appreciated. Any other tips regarding family photos would be appreciated as well.

Good Lighting is important either natural or fill.

Which lens should I use 17-50 or 50mm? What aperture do I use for a family of 7?

If you have limited space, I would use the 17-50mm as you might end up being on the wide end of the range. Aperature of f8 or higher should get everyone in focus.
