I know, I know, I know already... many don't like selective color photos, this post is for those who do like it or want to try it ;)
I use selective color once in a while and wanted to see the difference between running an PS Action to do it or just using an Hue/Saturation Layer to do it.
I like the 1st one I ran the Action on more than the 2nd one that was just a desat job. The desat one make Ani's skin look really splotchy.
How do you do selective color?
I made a small Action that lets me use a Brush on a Mask instead of the History Brush. Much more control on what happens. I just run the Action and choose the size Brush I want and make it medium soft and start painting the color back in, if I make a mistake, I just hit the X key on the keyboard and paint the color back out (undo the mistake) and hit X again and continue on. Can change the Opacity of the brush at any time.
If you want to try the action and tell me if it works the way it should it is here:

I have and use all kinds of Action files from many different places and put ideas from them together with my ideas into ones that do what I wish them to do.

Using an Hue/Desaturation by itself make her skin too blotchy/splotchy I think.

Sorry, I like the picture and I like a black & white with some artfully applied color, but I really don't like this one. Part is that you seem to have overshot the area of the lip where the lipstick goes. The other part of it is the color, it is too bright. A darker tint might look better.
I know your post is not about the picture, per se, but I guess a better example of the technique might make it more inviting.

Guess you will have to take that up with Ani, since she is the one that put the lipstick on. I am not applying color, I am un-covering the original color that is there already in the color photo. Notice I didn't go past the lipstick like you think I did.

This is not a "colorized" B&W photo. I haven't changed the color of the lipstick.

Maybe you are thinking about colorized photos vs ones with selective color?

i dont like this one, it looks like she ate some spaghetti without a fork. i think what everyone has a problem with is the fact that the color that shows through is so drastic against teh B&W, that it appears fake. i for one like the original, or maybe if you just took this one with her natural lip color, as that would be plenty of contrast.

Now that's a photo! The BW with color, even though its real, is just too contrasty for me. Love the original though.

When I do selective coloring I always fade or desaturate the color so it doesn't stand out as much against the B&W. Although, I know from all of your other posts you are fond of vibrant colors and like them to really pop!

I think your original (full colour) picture looks far better. It's a really nice picture. But if you want to go with the selective colour one I would fade the colour in the lips way down so it shows as just a hint of red. Maybe do the same thing with the blue of the dress.

I prefer the original, very beautiful. Why not try fading the red a little as a couple of people have mentioned. It just seems too bright. I do like these kind of photos so try some more and repost.

The red's a bit bright in the B&W for my tastes, I prefer the color one.

Ehhh, yea, I agree with everyone else. The Red is far to bright for the black and white. This photo just isn't a good selection for this type of editing. Maybe with a different picture of your wife, but not this one. Try the technique on something else and see how it comes out. This picture just isn't doing it for me.

yeah i was just kidding about the spaghetti thing. i understand what you are trying to prove. what i was trying to say was that in all of the pictures i have ever seen where the pic is converted to black and white, and some history brush work is done, the colors always look fake. i think it is an optical illusion, for some reason the colors look oversaturated, even though they are not adjusted. I think the picture would look a little better if you had just brought her natural lip color through (with no lipstick) as the lipstick makes it look fake even though it isnt. her natural lip color would be less dramatic and may look "normal" to people. i realize for this shot it isnt possible though. great looking wife and great shot.:)

I've done a couple of "selective none-desaturating" shots :) Some of my earlier work, not fantastic but shows the concept of red lipstick b&w photo :D
And a pic of them lips closer in full colour a few months down the line:
