HDR's never work out when there are moving people in the shot. The first shot has all kinds of weird stuff going on in the crowd and it detracts from the image (the lady with no face in the bottom left corner is particularly interesting)
Question, did you take a tripod with you to get these shots? I'm going to Rome in a couple of months, and toyed with the thought of taking a tripod, but think I pretty much convinced myself to leave it home. I know alot of places won't let you use one. I may take a monopod instead, and prop it up against something to make a poor boy tripod. My main reason for the tripod is to get some HDR, but Photomatix and Photoshop do a pretty good job lining things up for me when I hand hold and shoot off a burst.

I actually love the effect for ghosting people in HDRs. its hit or miss many times but always makes for something interesting.

the best time you can use a tripod is early morning around sunrise, there are not many people around. you can also use it around places like the Coliseum anytime. you should bring it and feel out when and where u want to use it. just leave it in the hotel room when you go to churches and/or the vatican.

Looks like he desaturated the blue, which it needed. I find blue, magenta and purple usually need to be tamed down as they come out too strong.

In PS, New Adjustment Layer - Hue and Saturation, than you should have the abilites to adjust various colors

what I did was I went into adjustments>color balance and moved the slider away from the blue a bit on each one and only the blue/yellow slider. I started sliding the slider back toward yellow on the highlights just a bit then clicked mids and slid back toward yellow and the same for the shadows but only a bit. After I pulled the entire image away from the blues I added a little lab color sharpening by doing this
image>mode>lab color
inside the channels pallet select "lightness"
then while in lightness I did this step
filter>sharpen>unsharp mask (amount 50, radius 1.0 pixel, threshold 4 levels)
I sharpened in labcolor on the lightness tab so that the sharpening doesn't affect the colors and create nasty halos.
The lab color sharpening will make it brighter and give it more pop
then last step go back to RGB
image>mode>RGB color

added contrast (moved slider up 12)
added digital velvia pro (DV intensity 2)
labcolor sharpen
digital velvia pro is a great action that makes boosting colors quick. Looks like he doesn't offer my version anymore but this version looks like it does more and it's only 24 bucks
