View Full Version : Using grip for 30D-should I buy a 3rd battery?

I picked up a used BG-E2 for my 30D and I love using it. I charged up both my batteries before putting them in the grip a few weeks ago and I've shot hundreds of pictures and my camera is still showing a full battery. Based on the literature that came with the grip I can get up to 2000 shots if I'm not using the on-board flash.

I'm starting to worry about what will happen when the batteries do run down though, since I only own the two batteries that are in the grip. Once the battery indicator goes down to one "bar" do I still have a lot of juice or is it telling me I've got the same reserve as if I had only one discharged battery on board?

Do most of you running the grips have a third charged battery with you as a backup?

Thanks, Mitch

If you're worried, it'll run fine with a single battery - keep the second for reserve.

I usually keep one in the grip, and one as an extra. Allows for easier battery management.

there should be no issues running aftermarket batteries in the grip or the camera. I have two Canon and two 3rd party batteries and use them interchangably both with the grip and the camera.

BTW, do you have the AA tray? You could always keep that around as a backup.

I have 2 Phottix Batteries I use as extras and they seem to do pretty well. Sterling Tek seems to have a good reputation around these forums too.

If you are so worried and nervous, why not get two more batteries for around $20 and charge them as extra. Simple!

I'd simply take them out and charge them after a thousand shots or so. If you don't want to do that, then pick up a couple Sterlingteks for 20 bucks and call it a day.

I run with two Sterlinkteks in my grip and have the Canon as a backup. Works great!

Great advice. I think I will pick up at least one more battery. No worries!
