Today, I was trying to take a picture of a creek with a long exposure. The problem I encountered was I could not get a long enough exposure without having the picture blown out. I tried raising the f-stop but nothing was helping. Any insight as to what I can do. I am about a month into taking photos with a good camera so any help will be greatly appreciated.

if longer shutter speed is what you need, you can get a ND* filter that reduce the volume of light entering the lens. that way you can maintain the f-stop as well as bumping up the shutter speed.
*ND filter is like a sunglasses for our eye, it is a tinted filter available in ND4 and 8. I'm not sure about other grade but i think there's a few grade you can select from. the higher the number the darker the filter is.

Now there is also a trick which THIS (http://www.flickr.com/photos/anthonyko/sets/72157600257527104/) guy has mastered requiring little more than a black card ;)
I've tried it and it does work but TBH I use ND filters myself, though I do carry some black card in my bag ;)
