Is it that bad? I thought it captured a bit of that old-time, Appalacian Americana feel.

Some folks I met in Derita, NC. I stopped to take some pictures of the oldest Pin Oaks in the area, massive beautiful trees and these folks had one in their front yard.

Rural Americana. Not bad. Just too much extraneous material in the picture for my taste. Cropping out the stuff in upper right might help. Sorry, second look says no way to crop...

No, not in any way related! They were nice folks though.

when i'm in the people forum i always give my 2 cents, i forget my manners.
but i like the image just the way it is, no need to crop. each detail is important for the set up in this couples porch-says alot about them. i like the picture very much as is. i LOVE portraits and you captured a great one.:D

I like it too. The stuff on the porch adds context to the pic. My wife grew up in the hills of West Virginia, and some of her relatives could be in this pic. Thankfully, she came out with all her teeth intact.
I know how it feels to get the tons of views but no comments. Makes me wonder if I'm doing that poorly, but I'm guilty of the view with no comment as well. How about taking a look at the shot I just posted in here (Spring, southwest style) and letting me know what you think?

I like your shot. The porch junk is a necessary component - wouldn't be appalachia without it. The smiles are great.

Nice, but I agree with that there is too much extraneous material.

The subject are just so unattractive that it ruins the picture for me.
Just my opinion. I am no pro.

Not a bad photo. I like these types of portraits. They give the viewer a better understanding of what the people are like. For me, this photo tells the story "we ain't got much, but we got eachother". Composition is off though. Horizontally it's okay, but vertically something's missing. A few steps back may have been a better viewpoint.
