View Full Version : 1D classic and the 430EX II

I picked up a 1D classic a few weeks ago and my 430EX II wasn't working properly at first. I knew you could tighten the screws and clean it out by taking the plate off so I did that the other day. That night, it worked fine. Yesterday it changed though. I went to use it and I adjusted everything like I usually do. Camera was on manual at 1/200, f/5.6, ISO 400 to block out any ambient and the flash was on E-TTL at 0 FEC. I bounced it like I usually do as well and it fired. But the preview was as if it didn't fire and I just had a tiny hint of a silhouette. Added a stop of FEC and it was exactly the same. I ended up switching to my 400D because I needed the shots, the flash worked fine on the 400D and I had no problems at all.

First I had a thought that it was something to do with the 1D classic being E-TTL and the flash being E-TTL II. But it worked fine the other day, so how could that be? Then I thought it could be the batteries, but it worked fine on my 400D minutes after it wasn't on my 1D.

Hopefully I get some good responses in here, I wasn't sure if I should have put this in the EOS Digital Cameras section or here.

interesting, I have the 430EX I and have no problems with on my 1D, though...I think I've had that once or twice.

is this a consistent problem? maybe try 1st/2nd curtain (though I doubt it'd help)
Clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol?

were your 1D batteries low? for me, I dunno, the shutter (to me) sounds higher pitched when the batteries are flat.

Of course that happens! I just turned it on again to check the battery and checking if any settings had changed without me realising... It worked fine. Must have been a one-off, maybe I just didn't lock it in properly/all the way. If it happens again I'll bump this thread but I hope it was just me being stupid.
