anyways i am going to someone elses house for the weekend and i was wondering if i can download jpegs to their computer without installing the canon software.

can i do this with the PTP setting or PC Connection setting..
is it doable without software?

It depends what there PC has for software. But you can load your pic's with other than Canon software. (I use the software from a Fuji S2 Pro.)

A compact flash card reader will work best, simple and easy to use.

I'd go with the card reader as well. I've gotten to taking a small usb card reader with me in my camera bag so that if I am at someone else's place and they want to see my images then it's really easy to facilitate. Of course most of the time I forget to switch to JPG from RAW.

If they have WinMe, W2K or WXP, you may need to load the DRXT drivers. For Win98 you almost certainly will. If you don't use EVU, but instead rely on Microsoft's support for cameras, set your camera to PTP mode. Of course, using an already-installed card reader is the best solution.

Card reader and make sure they don't get "accidentally" erased after downloading. A lot of people have that as a default after downloading, at least I do.

Without the Canon s/w it'd require you to deliberately do so (or "Move" rather than "copy" the files).
