Its my first camera ever, Canon 20D and 17-40L. I had this for 1 week so take it easy on me :P

The question is, did you learn from the shoot? I've learned more from simple set ups like that than probably anything else.
I think it's a novel idea. The DoF is a little shallow in my opinion, but certainly doesn't detract from the photo.

I used 2 sheets of Epson ink jet paper and Speedlite 580EX flash.
My room was very dark when i took this shot.

Yep, that's exactly what I do. Play around and see what works. Then try to remember what worked. ;)

I dont like how the pliers are cut off at the bottom. I would have tried to get them both in the picture nicely, filling the frame. The setup you made is not too bad either.
