View Full Version : Contest #24: Voting!

I've been taking part in these contests since last summer and this has to count as one of the best turnouts we've ever had. Both for quality and quantity. Great work everyone! :D

As you are aware, you can view all the photos here:

http://canondigitalphotographycontests.fotopic.net/c494231.html (http://canondigitalphotographycontests.fotopic.net/c494231.html)

The number of photos poses a problem for the voting, as we have 32 photos and the poll option only allows for 20. To overcome this, I have established two separate polls of 16. Please vote in only one of these. At the end of seven days, the photo with the most votes will be declared the winner.

While this is clearly a contest, it is also designed as a learning experience for us all. Therefore it would be great if, as well as voting, you could post some thoughts about your choice. What lead you to choose a particular photo? Perhaps you were going to vote for another, but something put you off? Can you give some constructive criticism for the person next time?

So we can keep everything together, please make any comments in this thread rather then in the voting threads.

Voting

Vote for:
Photos 1 – 16 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=69427)
OR
Photos 17 - 32 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=69428)

Good luck everyone! :D

There are some exceptional photos submitted. They are so special that I'm not sure, we little guys, can compete with. But as luck have it, we have to rub shoulders with such great photos. Photo No. 29 is out of this world if you ask me. Just beautiful.

Big_Guy, this is confusing. I've already been to 3 threads about the contest & voting.

aam, we have too many photos to fit on one poll, so I have run two voting threads instead. The idea is that you just vote in one of the threads. I know this isn't perfect, but I think its the best way of organising it given the number of photos. Let me know if this still isn't clear.

Big_Guy, is this the main voting place?

Yes it is. I know the title could have been clearer, but I can't change it now. Sorry for any confusion.

#9 Window: This is my kind of photos. The simplicity is very appealing (I didn't say beautiful, did I?)

#11 Too Dimensional: It could be Too Dimensional, but it looks Three Dimensional to me. Love the perspective. The choice of B&W is spot on. Love it.

#30 Walt Disney Concert Hall: WAW. If I were the photographer I would definitely print it. This is exhibition halls material. Heck, it could win at big national competitions

I think it's #24 for me. I like the originality of the concept and the photo is beautifully executed. My only gripe is that I wish the DOF was slightly larger.

A very close second was #5 (JFK airport). I love these sorts of photos.

#20 is also good, but I'm put off by the wonky focus and the glare on some of the leaves.

Unfortunately the poll system allows you only one vote. However you can comment on as many as you like :)

Since ypou've divided the contest in two, could we have two winners (i.e one for the first group, one for the second group) for this contest?

Not all of the images were showing up for me. I voted based on what was there.

Yeah, I was thinking about that, but then I thought that it might be a little unfair if one group was stronger then the other. Therefore I was thinking that it might be better to do an overall first/second/third place. What do you think? Anyone else have an opinion on this?

I just checked and I can't see any problems. Perhaps there was an issue with fotopic for a while. Let me know if you still have any issues.

Dave - dumb questions are the only ones I ever seem able to answer ;) . We start a new contest every three weeks (the next one is due to start around Saturday), so keep checking this part of the forum. Everyone is welcome and I hope you can join in on the next one :D

Big_B,
I think there is an image in group two wich is (by true value) mentioned very often, so new people are drawn to this group of pictures with a side effect that the first group of photo's get less attraction. My idea is to have a winner in both groups and then a second vote round for the overall winner.

Rense,

I think there are three things I want to say in response to this. Firstly,
I can see where you are coming from and I very nearly went with this approach. However I decided not to, partly in order to keep the voting process quick and simple, and partly for the reasons discussed below.

Secondly, I don't accept the premise that the second group of photos are getting more exposure. That would be true if the photos were stored in separate galleries, but this is not the case. Every time someone clicks the gallery link, they are exposed to ALL the photos. Indeed, photos 1-16 are displayed first, so it might be argued that they get more exposure then the later ones.

Thirdly, you mentioned that there is one particularly strong photo in the second group. If I adopted your system then it would be difficult for any other photos in the second group to get any recognition.

Please don't think I'm trashing your suggestion. I'm definately not doing that. There aren't any perfect systems and each has its disadvantages. If we received many more photos, I think yours would have been the most sensible approach. However, in these circumstances I decided that a single vote with 1st, 2nd and 3rd places was the most simple and straightforward way of managing the process.

Thank you for your understanding. :)

Change of subject, but I'm looking to set up a rolling photographer of the year competition. If you are interested in finding out more, please click here (http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=69650)

#5 [JFK airport] in my mind is an exceptional image, it captures a wonderful perspective. It is a winner. :)

I don't feel offended in any way, just making a suggestion for a possible handling of the arisen situation.

You've made some good points in your mail. About the exposure point: I was not talking about the exposure from the gallery, but from the comments made in the voting thread: people read about a nice picture in group 2, start looking at the gallery, next they start looking up the approriate voting thread, see only the possibilty for voting on pictures of the second group and make a vote in this group ...

I hope for the next contest, that we get so many good photo's that we have to resort to 'my' voting system!

Kind regards,

Theresa,

Is it that you can't see the actual image, or that you can't see where to vote for it? I've just checked the site and all the images appear for me. Perhaps you could tell me a few of the ones that you are having trouble with so that I can investigate further.

Sorry for any difficulties caused.

It's worth mentioning that fotopic.net is notorious for not working all the time. So if the photos don't show up, just wait a while and try again.

THE VOTING IS NOW CLOSED!! :D

Thanks to everyone for submitting such wonderful photos!

Sand Dunes (#29) developed a clear lead very early on and maintained that to win with a massive 37 votes. However, that shouldn't take away from the quality of the other photos.

Joint in second place were numbers 24 (Rokuro 1) and 30 (WD Concert Hall).

Triangular Shapes everywhere came in a very close third.

Great work everyone! :D

Now, lets have some suggestions for the next topic. What would you like the next contest to be?

aam1234
30th of April 2005 (Sat), 05:47
What do you say we make it a bit "wild" and I don't mean as in animals. Here is the idea (which I stole from somewhere else, thanks Paul). How about anything that was mentioned in Led Zepplin's "Physical Graffiti" album.

We can list the name of the songs and a link to the lyrics. And anything mentioned there is game.

Big_B
30th of April 2005 (Sat), 11:21
Sounds interesting! I'm afraid I don't know the song, so can you post the lyrics?

EricKonieczny
30th of April 2005 (Sat), 17:28
How about "Light"

Where the actual light in the image makes up content in the picture. The light must be a major influence on the picture. It can have people, places, or objects in the picture but the light must be different than what you would find the subject normally in. Without the "light", the point of the picture would be dramtically changed.

Just a thought, since light is a major influence on how we take pictures.

Just joined a little while ago and am impressed by all the great shots.

I like #9 it is simple and defines the parameter of the contest.

Looking forward to submitting a picture for the next contest.
