At last I have a good copy of a Tamron SP 28-75 f2.8 XR Di. This is my second copy, the first one was purchased second hand but front focused. Went for repair they said it was OK, took my 10D & 50mm f1.8 to be checked with it(Canon apparently use the 50mm as a test benchmark). Everything came back OK but was told there was a compatibly issue with my 10D and the Tamron (strange Di designed for digital bodies?). Purchased a second hand Tokina 28-80 f2.8 AT-X Pro, nice solid, quiet, sharp lens but AF was not accurate wide open but fine with MF (With both my 10D & EOS 5). Took this to repaired and it came back OK within specs. Traded this lens in for a new Tamron 28-75 f2.8 today, at last nice focused pics wide open. Sorry about the long post but I just wanted to share my experience as many of you have probably been through the same.
A couple samples at f2.8

Great shots... and your lens list is just about the set-up I would like to have eventually.

Very nice photo's,,so crisp and sharp.
I am trying to decide between the Tamron 28-75 and the Canon L 24-70

If you've got the money to spare and like a sturdy build quality and tack sharp pictures, get the Canon L series. If you're on a budget, the Tamron certainly does not dissapoint. Build quality is a little weaker, but it's lighter and still very sharp. The difference in picture quality between the L and Tamron is marginal with a slight advantage to the Canon which is a little more contrasty IMO.

Trevor,
I agree with everthing norcal99 said about the Tamron, shame that it's not a bit wider (24mm). If you buy the Tamron you could always put the money you saved towards another lens as it looks like your just building up your kit.
