Hi,

I have recently moved on from compact Canon digitals to purchasing a Canon Rebel 300.

I thought I would treat myself to a photography course. I am blessed with fairly good composition skills, but am keen to learn more of the technical aspects of photography. However, the courses I have found which appeal mix film and digital skills - mainly concentrating on the film aspects.

I can pick up the film version of the 300 for a song currently - but I wondered whether my lenses would be compatible between the two cameras?

I am hoping you guys can help me out on this one - I have done some searching, but haven't been successful finding an answer elsewhere.

Thanks very much for any help you can provide!!!

I thought they were. I read that Canon EF can be used on digital and film EOS cameras.

Try downloading the manual for both cameras from Canon and comparing. Should tell you at the back.

If they both have an EF lens mount then you are sorted!

I think they are. I never looked but I do think they both are EF lenses. I have been a Nikon person until I went digital so I am not up to speed on any canon film camera.

EF lenses will fit on any Canon EOS camera. EF-S lens only fit on the 300D/20D/Rebel XT.

I have a film rebel and a digital rebel. I can confirm that the EF lenses, as well as sigma and tamron lenses for EF mount, work on both. I have not tried the EF-S lens on the film rebel -- suspect it would break the mirror inside.

You cannot use EF-S lenses such as the 10-22 and 17-85 on a film camera, or even on most digital cameras except the 20D, 200D and 350D. All other Canon EOS lenses and most third party EOS compatible lenses will fit on all on all Canon digital and film cameras manufactured since Canon switched from the FD to the EOS system.

Some older third party lenses will fit on new cameras, but will not function properly due to electronic problems. Many of these can have the electronics upgraded to correct this problem, but there are some that are out of production and chip upgrades are not developed for newer cameras.

Im not sure about this course you are taking. What technical differences are there between film and digital as far as photography factors such as exposure, composition, aperture selection, camera handling, etc.? Good photo technique is the same in both mediums. The differences occur after the latent image has been recorded on the film or digital medium and you want to produce a visible image.

I suspect the reason behind their lack of enthusiasm for the digital side was that they didn't have the facilities to print digital images.

Thanks everyone for your help - much appreciated - I am off to bid for a film SLR!
