View Full Version : EE and Cox communication

To anyone who may offer advice. I tried to install EE on my webspace with Cox communications. They are running an Apache server, but I don't think they support the database that needs to run. I entered localhost and a blank password, but my installation failed the installation check.

What are the odds that I screwed something up v.s. Cox does not run the database software as needed by PHP?

I don't mind fooling around with it more, but don't know where to turn.

Any advice/suggestions appreciated,

Paul D. Jaruszewski

I don't understand why you want to install EE if cox does not support database. You will not be able to display any photos without a database under EE. Any other solution?

I do want to use the program, and am not 100% sure if Cox doesn't support the database. It is possible that they do, and I am having a different problem with configuration. My hope was someone would be able to tell me that they did set the program up and let me in on the secret, or possibly someone who knows more abouit the situation would say that Cox doesn't support it and they are sure.

Paul,

If you are talking about the webspace that Cox gives you as a "high speed internet" subscriber, then I am 99% certain they will not support EE. I use Cox in Virginia and they have told me that I can't do it here; I assume the same would apply for you. Hopefully I am wrong and you have better luck in So. Cal.

(Afterthought: I am guessing the reason they won't support the database for residential subscribers is that they think only commercial sites would need one. They want you to pay up for commercial service. :( )

Thanks Mitch for the reply. I think you are correct, but wanted a second opinion before I gave up on the EE project I had planned.

Well you could always sign up for a domain of your own and host it remoteley. I found a company in British Columbia who hosts mine, and I am in Ontario. It cost me about $8.00 a month CAD, in american that'd be what ... $4.75 USD??

That includes MYSQL (the database, the server, my own domain, my own email accounts, and 150meg of space .. etc) Shop around there are some good deals out there!

I went with Lunarpages. I was going to go with a competitor, but they were impossible to contact. Gave Lunarpages a call, had webspace in 5 minutes. They were nice too.

My DNS server was updated within 12 hours, if your's has as well, you can visit my site at www.melor.com

As of yet, I have no entry page, and only a handful of pictures, but IT WORKS.

Thanks Sean. Question to you. Are you using EE 1.3? Did you migrate from 1.22 or did you have to reinstall?

I see that 1.3 is available to some on the www, and will wait for general release in a week if it requires reinstall of the entire database. I left another note like this on another thread, but no answer.

Help... I don't want to spend hours setting up 1.2 only to have to do a total reinstall.

Paul,

I upgraded from 1.22 to 1.3 smoothly. I don't think you need to reinstall. The upgrade only requires you to FTP some updated files to your existing 1.22 and run a upgrade script. It is easy. And for most softwares, you don't have to reinstall.

I am running a 1.3 release candidate version, but I think it is easier for me to convert to 1.3 final version than if I had 1.22.

If you are eager to try it out, then get 1.22 and 1.3RC. If not, it doesn't hurt to wait 1.3 final version. :)
