Are there any detrimental effects of using a step up ring on a smaller diameter lens to use filters for a larger one?

I have a Tamron 19-35 zoom with a 77mm thread and have just ordered a Tamron 28-75 with 67mm thread. Both lenses have their own skylight filters for protection but looking at the prices of the circular polarizers it would be nice to buy just one and a step up ring.

Help!

I'd be interested in some input on this also ... I certainly don't want to buy a CP for every filter size in my lens collection. Is there anything detrimental in using a 77mm CP on a 67mm lens with a step up?

I don't see why not..
you just may want to take off the skylight filter before putting on the step up ring.

The only negative aspect is that usually you can't use the lens hood simultaneously.

Yeah that's true about the lens hood.
I use my polarizer with the lens hood, but it's not easy to turn the polarizer with the hood on..
I can only get like a pinky in there.
