hi, first, i want to thank everyone for providing so much information :)

this is my first post here... so, the question...

im thinking in a way of using 50D + 580EX ii on camera plus another 580EX as slave. as canon have build-in wireless communication, i was thinking ive found the perfect system. (thanks PacAce for the tut)

but after reading manual, ive found it to be a "optical" system, using light to communicate with the second flash. so, the problem begin.

anyone with experience on this system, knows if the master > slave flashes must be "in sight" for a perfect workflow? the optical system can work perfect with the light that control the other flash reflected in the scene?

im asking this cause i whant to use the umbrella BEHIND me, you know? umbrella with slave flash > me with main flash on camera pointing the scene > scene

i know there is some wireless systems, but as i live in brazil, we do not have acess to "outside equipment", and i would like not to have a bunch of flash, adapters, etc hanging in my camera ;)

tnks for any info on this ;)

obs: i need the ability to do hi-speed burst mode :(

The 580s communicate with each other via infra red light and as such 'line of sight' is necessary, however, if you are indoors there is a good chance that even if your units cannot see each other the 'bounce' of the IR (infra red) will reach you slave unit, if it doesn't, you have to turn the unit around until the red receivers face each other and then turn the flash head towards your subject.
Hope this clears a few things up for you.
Somebody else will have to reply to you about the hi-speed bursts, out of my knowledge.

I'm in a similar situation. I have a 580EX II and an old 420EX. I was thinking of getting the ST-E2 but I think I will have to go with the Pocket Wizards.

Is there anything that the ST-E2 does that makes is a better transmitter than the 580EX or 580EX II as a master?

It will work fine with an umbrella if indoors. Outdoors, I usually don't have any trouble either, but I do swivel the flash so that the sensor faces in the general direction of the on camera 580EX master. I have thought about getting RadioPoppers, but the optical system is actually fairly workable. I would use a 580EX (I or II) over the ST-E2 for a master.

I am trying to use a similar setup for an outdoorshoot this weekend.
Could you please share any useful experience for my benifit.

Thanks
