I am using the 580EXll but I need more power. I lose when I use a Stofen and when I shoot families from 15-18 feet away. I use a Better bounce card for 10- 12 feet and beyond that I get underexposure. I could raise the ISO above the 400 that I use but I would like more light. I dont like the Quantum because it seems to complicated to use. Any suggestions? thank you. rollsman

One of the Metz 'hammerhead' models, with the appropriate TTL adapter, would give you stacks of power and is no more complicated than the 580EX.

I have the Metz 76 model and it's has loads of power and using the E-TTL mode via the correct adapter it is no differtent than the 580 EX. I also have the Quantun and it's vastly underpowered compared to the Metz.

I use the 580 EX very little now that I have the Metz and Quantum.

In the event that you may want a very powerful unit without E-TTL capability, look at a Norman 400B with a rating of 400 watt-seconds. Just a thought.

Why you need flash on the camera?

I would have flash off camera and then trigger it depending on if you need eTTL or not. That way flash stays close to subject and is also not coming staright from the camera position.

I lose when I use a Stofen

Don't use the stofen
Open the aperture a bit more
Use more flashes
Use off camera flash(es)

Oh, make sure you are adjusting fec... it could be that its just getting confused and underexposing on purpose rather than through power limitations

Perhaps if you show a sample image or describe what you are trying to do people could offer more specific advice

If you think a more powerful ETTL compatible flash can be found, compared to the Metz 76MZ, you're not right, nor wrong!

The GN76, like for all flashes that have zoom heads, is an overstatement...if you consider the 45CT4 Digital, it has GN45 and covers 35mm. The 76MZ zoom head coverage set for 35mm lens on 135 format results in GN45.5 In other words at 35mm lens coverage it is NOT better than the 45CT4 Digital...it only is better when the zoom head narrows the coverage!

Ok thank you for the great suggestions. What if I have a Metz 60CT1 and put it on the auto setting and set the camera to manual and set the lense to the f stop on the flash
I am from the OLD school and thats how I used to do but I know lots of Photographers are using ETTL with good success.

When I used the Metz CL45, that's more or less what I used to do. You can use the camera in either manual or av mode and the the appropriate aperture on the flash. It's also very easy to use it for fill flash by altering the flash aperture setting. I'm also old school and I feel you have much more control this way.

The Metz 60CT has more real power than the 76MZ, without resorting to any zoom head to inflate the output rating. But again if you put the 76MZ flash head to >50mm position, its output would be greater than the 60CT.
