I do not know much about sunpak flashes, but I know the PZ42X is compatible with TTL metering.
It seems that sunpak has at least two versions of the flash, one compatible with Nikon and a different one compatible with Canon.
Catalog Numbers:
PZ42XC (Canon version)
PZ42XN (Nikon version)
I hope the C or N extension is visible somewhere in the flash so you confirm you got the correct version of it.

I bought a Sunpak several years ago claiming to be TTL compatible with my Minolta. Wasn't so. Would only work in auto using the sensor on the front of the flash or in total manual mode.

tara, i had the exact same problem, i bought this flash at best buy, it goes by a different name there but its the same flash, and the camera recognizes it but it doesnt flash, i took mine back and am planning to buy a canon flash instead, when i was searching for the solution for it, alot of people said the same thing, it will not work with their canon and its just a piece of crap.

I do not know If something that works with ETTL II will automatically work with ETTL but the G10 is not ETTL II.
On a side note I tried putting my 430 on the G10 and it just felt huge.
Personally I would say take that back and get a Canon 270 ex (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&shs=canon+270ex&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=jsp%2Fproduct.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=submit)
They are very compact and they still allow you to use bounce flash. However they do not swivel, if that is important to you.
It has just been my experience to get the thing that is made for the other thing from the same manufacture

If you want a small footprint flash:
1) Canon 220EX Guide Number of 65 (as in feet @ ISO 100)
2) http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/531665099.htm
Sunpak FLZ-50 Guide Number of 65 (but this one is very small, and you can bounce the light...I've used this with great success talks ETTL with the G9 and should with the G10 just fine. And has output controls on the outside as well)
3) Canon 270EX Guide Number 72.
I've been using this with the G9 and a 5D. It is smaller than the Canon 220EX and bounceable and supports a wide 28mm setting and 50mm setting. Does not have a high speed sync switch on the outside like the Canon 220EX. It does talk ETTL with the G9.
