View Full Version : Improving Shutter Lag on S200

Can the shutter delay on the S200 be improved by certain settings (i.e., no flash, no LCD)? How does the shutter lag on the S200 compare to their other Elph cameras?

I was holding off on buying a digital camera because of one basic problem: the shutter lag. I'm a casual photographer, but I like the occasional action shot. But I just got a Canon PowerShot S200 Elph as a gift. I had just previously been considering the S330 because I read that it had improved the shutter delay significantly. But it was a very nice gift, and don't want to refuse it or ask to get it exchanged. But lemme tell you, getting the perfect shot when the baby is smiling can be tough. I guess shooting in continuous mode is one solution...

I went to the Canon website to see if there were any firmware upgrades, but didn't see any. I hear that Canon tends to stop supporting its products pretty quickly. Is this true? Any chance that I could expect a firmware upgrade that improves response time?

Best wishes,

- Todd

Hi vanhoosear,

i've got an s200 aswell.. and i've notice the sutter lag.

you can improve the shutter lag by holding the shutter release half way, which does the focusing and metering.. then either hold it there before you click the sutter, or fix the balance and focus then click the sutter.

see your manual about setting a fixed focus and balance.

if you need more help email me mazaryk@hotmail.com

Is the shutter lag excessively long between you pressing the button down half ways, the focus and exposure setting and the camera taking the picture? All these compact cameras have a certain delay but it isn't that excessive. What subject are you taking pictures of? I know you mentioned children, maybe the focus isn't setting on your subject, is the camera beeping to let you know otherwise?

Shutter lag on the s110 is terrible too. It doesn't make any difference if I hold the shutter half way or not. If I don't hold the button all the way down for a full 2-3 seconds it will not take a picture. Big hassel and I would love to find a fix.

Definitely post a reply here if a firmware upgrade/workaround is found. I was at a friend's 30th birthday last night, and was really frustrated with the shutter lag all night long. It's such a great little camera for parties and vacations with just that one flaw. Unfortunately its a flaw that affects the primary use of the camera - taking pictures.

Does anyone have the S300 or 230? Are you having similar shutter lag problems?
