on camera and slave , or both off camera?

I already have a 550ex and a cable but it is a hassle holding both , so was thinking of getting a 420ex to use as the off camera flash in slave mode and the 550ex as the master on camera. How limited will I be in comparison to having both off camera?

You could extend your off shoe cord using this mod...

You can fire the master off camera via the cord on a lightstand, and also fire the slave with the master.
