View Full Version : G-10 scene modes VS Auto?

The G-10 has numerous scene modes which I haven't bothered to take advantage of yet.

I usually leave it in the auto mode thinking that "Auto" optimizes the camera settings for basically any scene; is my logic correct, or would specific scene modes be best for their specific shooting conditions?

Thank you,....marc

Not necessarily. Auto sets the exposure, ISO, and decides if a flash is needed plus possibly a couple of things I'm missing. Things like saturation, color balance, sharpness, etc. is always the same as far as I know.

The scene modes change some of these other factors. Landscape should give you more vibrant foliage colors, portrait is probably slightly heavy on the red side to give better skin tones, etc. Some of the modes will change how the camera auto focuses also.

For me the best solution is to shoot in RAW and then you get to make all the decisions in post processing instead of letting a Canon software engineer decide what you want.
