What are the differences between these two lenses?

Does the optical quality differ?
If not, I would prefer mark 1. I like built-in hood.

optiicly it's the same lens they replaced the hood with a more efective hood but I have yet to see any aberations or flair with the markI

Canon TC's are not compatible with the Mk I but are compatible with the Mk II.

I use a Canon 1.4 TC with my 200 f2.8 Mark I without any problems.... Where did you read that....?

Was told that by a reputable dealer when inquiring about a second hand 200mm f2.8 Mk I. He said he actually tried fitting one. If he was wrong, then he lost a sale due to his statement. In fact he still has the lens listed online.

Have you read the Sticky at the top of this section, look at my post there its the list copied from the info sheet that came with my 1.4 Canon extender mk 2. yes the latest version..

I've used this set up for some time, if that 200mm f2.8 L. is still in the shop at a good price just buy it.
also consider that if you need to sell it on in the future, possible to get nearly the same for it this type second hand tend to keep there value.
I got mine from ebay at £286, shop price will be more i guess, as they need to offer a guarantee.

So it may be that the TC Mk I and the 200mm f2.8 Mk I are not compatible?

My EOS Lens Work book states that the TC Mk II and 200mm f2.8 Mk I and II are compatible, but doesn't mention any compatibility with the TC Mk I.

Do you have the extender 1.4x mk 1 or mk2
if the mk1 extender has 11 electrical terminals facing the lens side it will work as far as i know.
The first 1.4x was in fact designed to fit only 3 lenses,
200mm f 1.8 L
300mm f2.8 L
600mm f4.0 L

these were thefirst & only ones fitted with 11 electrical contacts (going back to approx 1987 / 89 )
making them compatible with extenders 2x and 1.4x (unless someone knows different of course).
other lenses including the 200 2.8 L mk 1 were added later and whether all worked with extenders is unknown to me.
So use it with the mk 2 version and no problem.
my image below was taken with 200mm f 2.8 L plus extender

Ditto..

....this bit of misinformation is all over the 'net for some reason.. I'd love to know where it started and why it persists.

Thanks Glad to help.

OK... 200mm f 2.8 L introduced in Dec 1991........200 f 2.8 L mk 2 in March 1996

weight differance.
mk 1 = 790 grams
mk 2 = 765 grams add the hood and you got the same I guess.
you would be hard pushed to tell any differance in performance and sure we see someone somewhere has said the mk 2 is slightly better, but did they compare 50 lenses to reach this opinion, I would not think so. and we all know by now that not all lenses are 100 % identical .
way of the world i'm affraid.

For all the Bokeh fans out there.
set this lens at the closest focus distance ie: 1.5 Metres at f 2.8 apperture and the depth of field is approx 10 mm
set up at f 4 and it increases to 20 mm approx and the resulting out of focus areas become lovely natural
looking Bokeh
only other point worth a mention it will accept the tripod collar as an optional fitting.
