Greeting Forum users,

I'm new to DSLR and want to start micro photography (wild flowers). This is my first posting.

I've just bought a Cameron ring flash and would like to know what settings would be a good start.

I have a XTi; EF-S 17-85mm IS USM

I tried a few photographs using MF mode at the 'Macro setting'; Av mode F16 at 1/200 (Custom setting) and they were all very dark.

I've tried autofocusing with no improvement, as well as "P" mode with no luck.

Can anyone assist?

Next month I plan to get the Canon 100mm USM Macro lens. I've got a Velbon focus rail already, so all the components are slowly coming together.

With thanks,

D. Fielder

Please define acronym FEC.

Your bug pictures are excellent!

Assuming the flash is ETTL - use the camera in M mode and try 1/200th ISO 100 say F8-F11. If the pictures look darkish then as commented above set FEC on the camera to say +.66 and try again and up the FEC again if too dark. With flash you are best off using the camera in M mode for full flash or use Av/Tv mode for fill flash.

Thanks Brian,

With your suggestions, I believe I'm on the right track to getting better close-up shots with the ring flash. It really helps!
