Release is expected in fall 2009... 1d MkIII is £3000 here, 1ds MkIII is £5000... Do you think that around Jan'10 these will be cheaper, and by how much?

Not by much, and maybe not at all, i can at least tell you that.

Considering that these days 1D MKII's go for around $1200 and 1Ds MKII's go for $2200, yes I would expect the 1D MKIII prices to fall a bit once new models are announced. It's really difficult to say by how much the prices will fall IF a new camera is released this year. It depends on the availability and specs of the new model.

There should be some secondhand ones going as people upgrade

Release is now expected 1st quarter of 2010 and will be significantly more expensive than mkIII. There will be no reduction in mkIII prices while they run down shop stocks.

I would imagine in the used market, the MKIII would inch towards the $2000 price line. I would think the next gen would be at least $4000...probably between $4000-$5000. So there's probably enough separation there between the old and the new.

As far as new off the shel units go,
Typically, a New 1 Series means a replacement, and the timing is usually that shipments of the current model drop off substantially beofer the launch of the new model.

You may get lucky and find someone with old stock, and prices lowered a bit, but it's a crap shoot. With the 1Ds line, which moves much fewer units, it's easier for them to manage this "total replacement trick" in inventory, you more likely to get lucky with a "non -S"

Used is another story all together.

I would imagine $2300- $2500 price range for refurb. For new $2800 possibly.

The thing is, prices in the mean time could continue to go back up, I don't know that for sure. Yes the prices have dropped a huge amount on 1DsII's but it didn't happen right away. The 1DsMKIII's have been out at least a year and a half haven't they? I looked at the used ones about six months after the newer version came out and they were still I think around $4500 used.

Canon and Nikon have reportedly stated more effort will go into the professional market because in part of the glut of product by so many manufacturers in the amateur market and because the profit off of each higher priced professional product is so much more.

I've got to think that the 1DsMKII's and the 5D classic are two of the best dollar/camera values in the used camera market right now.

For prices, I don't think so. They won't get any sales if the MSRP is significantly higher. The price is similar to what they think the market can stand. In general, we tend to see little drop in the introduction MSRP but the feature set is much improved.

Depends on price drop, generally 1d cameras are intro'd about where the last one was intro'd, so in a sense higher than the previous camera (since the price dropped)

I haven't seen pro cameras (including the not exactly pro 5d) drop significantly after the successor comes out. In fact, they don't really get phased at all by any news. Prices just spike the first few weeks, level out to msrp, then go on their exponential decay to about 1k (then after 6-7 years they break 1k barrier and exponentially decay to about 250)

It makes sense for the release to be earlier so the camera is available for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

There are two other MAJOR sporting events later in 2010 - The World Cup in South Africa which will be held in June/July - probably the biggest sporting carnival outside the Olympics and then the Commonwealth games - presently scheduled to be held in India in October.
