Hey,

Buying a MB466 soon, and wondering what most have to reckon concerning photoprocessing on it (albeit w/external monitor) using GIMP.

I'll be moving to Canada at the end of the year (and around inside, so it must be portable, the MBP is too expensive and I'll just be using an external monitor anyway, so the point of the better screen is moot).

I currently run ubuntu, and am well used to processing there now. GIMP is available for Mac, certainly. Just haven't had the chance to use it yet.

I use Aperture + PSCS4 and there really is no competing with that save for LR + PSCS4. I stumble all over the place with The Gimp - it's methodology just down right confuses me. Hey, but if you can use it, all the power to you. Aperture does many smaller things that Gimp and PS were not designed to do quickly or effectively. If you are more of an artist than a photographer then LR and Aperture would probably not be necessary; iPhoto would do the job nicely for organization and small adjustments. Otherwise, Aperture is only $155 at Amazon - pretty cheap for professional quality software.

Thanks for that. I've heard Aperture is quite the program, watch this space as investigations continue! Right now, I'm pretty chuffed with RawTherapee + GIMP (on par with LR with the exception of file-organisation). Gimp does a lot of the same things PS does, but as you said, in a 'different' way. I can live with it...it's free vs $...

That said, if Aperture is all it's cracked up to be, then count me in!
God, there's some flamewar going on the other thread eh? Who cares what hardware you're using, chrissakes. Let's see his laptop do 24 bit, optical audio out..out of the box :D
