My first time even trying to shoot an event. I took a ton of pics, all w/ 85L on a 5D. Some things I would have done differently... I would have manually focused the fire-dancer guy and then shot away. As it was the vast majority were pretty soft or just OOF.

The first four pics are my choice from this set... Interesting light compositions too.

thanks. I agree the last two are kinda soft. #5 is not the greatest picture but he does have his tongue on the torch so that makes it kinda cool.

nice set. i like the first one the most. great job on shooting for your first event. i tried shooting the mos def concert at pipeline here in hawaii, but it didnt turn out so great. it was my first time trying to shoot an event too. what mode were you shooting in?

Mostly Tv. I had a target shutter speed to get the blur of the fire and then another target shutter speed to stop motion (like in #1).
I think I would stick with Tv in the future b/c under exposure is better than not getting the shot. However, I would set to manual focus and dial in the stage area if I was primarily pointed in one area. I had a bunch of bad focus throwaway pics b/c my 5D w/ 85L was hunting so much for focus.
Lots to learn. I really like that first one. Feel like I lucked out as I could see that one or the second one on the cover of a brochure for the place.

Yeah it is a lot to learn. I left my camera on manual thinking that the settings I had in mind would be fine, but I was wrong. I bet the 85 provided excellent reach. And the exposure on the first pic is very well done. I just noticed the bit of fire right above his tongue. Did you do any post processing for any underexposed images?

Not really any PP for exposure. I may play around w/ some masking or selective boost but an overall boost didn't help me much.

I like the first shot.
Why don't you use a flash?
Was it not possible?
Do you were too far?
Or you do not have a sufficiently powerful external flash?

I have a 580ex but thought it would be too disruptive to the other people there to be blasting away w/ the flash all night.

Great series. The "fire eaters" ( I guess they're called that) shots were great. Good composition considering the low light situation but the light from the fire just got enough of them to see what was happening.

I'm not on flickr, so unlikely. A couple are decent but not decent enough to steal.

I think this is a pretty popular show, so it's likely there are a bunch of photos floating around like yours. Anyways, nice shots.
