Hello everyone, I am new to night club type photography and gave it a shot the other night. I am just curious how to compete with the fog machines in the bars. Is there a secret to get a crisp image with fog in the room? I am shooting with the 50mm 1.8 on my Canon 50D on ISO 1600. Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Chris

Fog machines are the bane of every concert photographer's existence, because they are often overused. All you can really do is look for opportunities where the light and fog interact favorably. If there is a ton of fog it can knock down the contrast and make AF more difficult. In post, you can up the contrast/clarity to cut through the fog a bit as well.

Walk around the club and unplug about 2/3rds of them. ;)
Try and keep yourself away from the lights a bit. Position yourself so that there are as few lights shining in between you and your subject as possible.
Also, get your flash as far away from your lens as possible.
If you have Lightroom, the blacks slider helps cut through it a bit along with contrast/clarity the Drew mentioned.

Bingo.
This also means: No direct, on camera flash...

Sometimes fog can add a nice effect, but normally it just gets in the way.
