View Full Version : Sky Tower & a Full Moon

Took a quick drive into the city this evening, and decided to shoot the sky tower. Also saw the moon rising up, and shot some of that also.
Of course to get them in the same shot perfectly exposed is impossible, unless you do some fancy photoshop work. Sky Tower shot, needs shutter speed of 1-8 seconds generally. But shooting the moon can be done around 1/200 at the same f-stop.
Anyway, here's a few of New Zealand's tallest building at 328 metres (1076 feet).

Looking straight up, below the rings.

Adding some plants as a foreground object.

And the interesting ones...

I liked the bright blurred cloud from the moon light. :)

This is photoshopped, obviously a fake over the overexposed moon, but this is what I would have love to do. Only quickly done, so you can get the idea.

Thanks everyone again. Sky Tower is still my favourite object to shoot or draw for the past 8 years! :)
A plane ticket costs about 700 quid plus taxes. ;) Emirates is fairly cheap, via Dubai, Singapore, Sydney - Auckland.
Stoney: The shaft of the tower is 12 metres diameter, so it really gives a nice perspective of such a narrow shaft from ground level! The top observation deck "Sky Deck" is 240 metres high, not the highest by world standards, but the view over Auckland is spectacular. I wouldn'd mind going up again with camera, and do a 360degree stitch. That's a big challenge. :D
Lynn: I Need to find my market. I'm not confident in selling anything just yet. I'm still so happy in just taking pictures for the fun of it. I may possibly set up a permanent stall at Craft World in Westgate, and sell some frames there. That will probably be my starting point. :)

Great shots sir! Me & the wife will be arriving in Auckland around the middle of January to spend 3 or 4 months touring NZ - seeing your shots only makes the waiting more difficult, can't wait to get out there!! :D.

You'll love it here! Even Auckland, just a city, is still a photographer's dream.
If you're into landscape and beach scenes, it's perfect. Beaches in each direction are only 1-45min away, depending which one you go to!
I've got some pretty decent shots at almost every beach now around the Auckland region. Only a few of the East coast beaches, I haven't shot.
West coast beaches are my favourite, as they're closest to myself, and are brilliant for good sunset photos.

Alright, we are going to get together on weekend and do some shooting :)
Those are fantastic shots of the skytower, if your looking for a market start with SkyCity :)
Heres my best shot of the skytower so far:

Haha, the casino paying for my photos? Nah they probably pay for professionals.
Whoever does it, must be using medium format or something. Some of their billboards/signs, are 20metres high, and the detail is great. The current one advertised on SkyCity is the Auckland Blues again, hanging the Rugby shirts from near the top.
PS. Nice shot!
I was shooting that also last night, but there was no detail. It's a lot better to do during the day. I think I have a similar shot taken with my Sony V1 from last year.

If they pay, then you become a pro :)
And they don't have to use them for billbourds.
They might put them on mugs, or other souviners, they could sell them on anything, even as prints.
Put together a portfolio and send it to them.

Love the color and contrast between the tower and the sky. I like the second one best.
