I am new to mac and new to nice cameras and was lookn for any tips or trick you all use for organization. I have iphoto 5 which makes creating beautiful dvd slideshows a piece of cake, as well as on screen shows really great. I also work photoshop a ton on my pics, but navigation through iphoto libraries is a nightmare on PS's file browser. I eventually started using the canon image browser that came with my XT to import and organize. Really simple and easy to navigate. Now that I want to create some slideshows, I'm importing back into iphoto, creating duplicates. A lot of them. I just duped 600 photos from my vacation. Anyone have a better system they are using. Thanks

Hi
iPhoto is primarily an organizational tool, although as you say it is great for setting up slideshows, and if you have a DVD burner, burning those shows for others. It also has some pleasant basic editing tools.
If you use iPhoto, don't use any other application to browse your images - that is where you are going astray. If you like iPhotos ability to make and manage albums and the other tools it has, stick with it.
For editing, you can do so in iPhoto, or in PS or PS/E, but from within iPhoto.
Open iPhoto
At the top of your screen select iPhoto, and click on Preferences
Click the General tab
Where it says "Double-click photo", select the 3rd option "opens photo in"
Then you click on "choose application" and navigate to PS, or any other editing application.
This means that you can use iPhoto to download and manage your images. If you want to edit them in PS, simply double-click the image in question and it will open in PS. Edit as you wish, then close the image and the changes will be saved in iPhoto.
By the way, iPhoto will always keep a copy of the original for you.
Hope this helps.
I suggest you grab this book:
iLife 05 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321335376/qid=1114448093/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-9592579-1887056)
It offers wonderful tips on the entire iLife suite in an easy to follow, visual manner.

ok thanks! I guess it is a matter of gettn the flow down. I still have been unable to get iphoto to recognize my camera and import directly. I'm using the canon software and then importing to iphoto. Any ideas why this is? I have the rebel xt btw. Thanks again

It's possible, but unlikely, that iPhoto does not yet recognize the XT.
You could check the following:
Open the Finder
go to Application
Find Image Capture
Open Image capture preferences
select the Camera tab
You will see it says 'When a camera is connected, open:"
From the drop-down list, make sure iPhoto is selected.
In any case, I suggest you do not download from the camera - you are using up battery power unnecessarily.
If you can, grab a card reader. They are fairly cheap now, just make sure it's USB2. If you get a reader, you don't need to change the image capture settings above - iPhoto will open as soon as it recognizes a card of images.
