Challenge #224 - The Wheel
Wheels - one or more, any angle, any size, attached to something or not - you decide!
Have a 'wheely' good time:o
The Results!!!!
Thanks again for all your entries and giving me a headache tonight! I’ve spent the entire evening scrolling up and down and back up again and my top three have changed umpteen times! Comments in the order the pictures where posted.........
Chisel – Bicycle Italy 2007
Lovely composition, love the way the large tyre sits in front of the bicycle wheel and the muted colours. The only distraction is the top right hand corner.
Randall n LV – Old Fire Truck Wheel
Love the way the sunlight highlights parts of the wheel, particularly the centre, like nature has provided spot lights for you.
Piet – Wrecked Wheels
Lovely composition and the black and white really works.
MFor – Neowhe
The most unusual of the bunch and I have to ask what you used to get this pattern, I have spent an age looking at it and still can’t work it out! Love it!
Rpolitsr – dilapidated old wheel
Beautiful vibrant colour and detail opposing that poor wheel that looks like it has been there for a long time to be embedded in the dirt that way.
Michael Wells – Retired Wheels
Lovely composition filling the frame beautifully.
Ahobden – The Family Wheels
Lovely well thought out composition – tell me – which set of wheels is yours!
Marie – Home sweet Home
Oh Marie, these poor wee bikes, wherever did you find them? Love way even the wheelie bin wheel sneaked into the frame!
Kanonshooter - A Long Life
This poor wheel has obviously carried a lot of items in its time, so much so that it’s well and truly bent the tyre out of shape. Lovely detail.
Teekay – Cool Wheels
They are some seriously cool wheels and fascinating with it, wow.
Tomy – Oldie but Goodie
Isn’t it just! Someone obviously still loves this particular oldie, the shine on that chrome is amazing and I’ve never seen a white walled tyre so white. Perfect.
Kevan_G9 – Wheelipede
Kevan this wasn’t what I was expecting from you! Given your hobby I was expecting one of racer bikes so when this popped up I had a wee smile to myself! Then a further one imagining you actually taking this shot and what the other shoppers made of it! Great stuff – love the angle.
Ryandood
Lovely composition – should have been named ‘bottoms up’ or something similar. Love the muted colours and the hint of pink sky.
So for the final top three in my humble opinion.......
1st place goes to Michael Wells – retired wheels
2nd place goes to rpolitsr – Dilapidated Old Wheels
3rd place goes to Kevan_G9 – Wheelipede
There were so many great shots this week it really was a nightmare of a decision – thanks again for participating and over to you Michael for #225

Car,
It’s only right you stay up to all hours judging this contest; I was up to 1:30a.m. trying to decide which of my “real wheel” shots to post. Frankly, I liked my other contenders, but everyone in my family preferred this one so up it went. I’ll post my other contenders as I really had a good time taking photos of wheels. Thought, I think I’m done on this subject.
Chisel, I loved your photo. Great texture, funny, charming, the whole boot. MFor, I’m on to you…with some Googling I figured out that TVP1 is a Polish TV station; very cool approach though. Rafael in the meantime is pegging the HDR look, really nice.
My wife and I spent some time traveling the backcountry of the Hudson Valley this long weekend , about a 100 miles north of Manhattan, in apple orchard country. There’s plenty of rusty farm equipment up there, but I saw that Mr. Wells and some others were picking up on that theme so I stuck to other subjects.
Car, sorry to disappoint, but I just couldn’t make the bike subject work for me and that was a bit of fresh air. ‘Sides others pegged that wheel ahead of me. Oh, before I forget, ryandood, gotta luv the SUV rumps sticking up in the air, very funny.
So here the other shots I took regarding wheels. And lastly, congrats to the other winners and everyone who participated. Good job Car!

Car,
Very good job judging, you chose a photo with beautiful composition. Your comments on all the pix are good and helpful.
Here's a fun one I shout 8 years ago, with an old Olympus, I think it was something like 1.4 megapixel. Lousy composition. :-)

You didn't disappoint - just surprised me - but then you should always expect the unexpected eh! I do like all your other contenders but think you put the right one on in the end. So how many funny looks did you get taking that shot????

Thank you Chisel, your entry was beautiful and I have to ask about the composition - did you set it up that way purposefully with the big wheel in front of the other?
Like your old Olympus shot too - looks like a wheel graveyard ;)

Honestly Car, I was so deep into my art, I had no idea what people were thinking. LOL!
Actually, the A&P was sorta quiet while my wife ran inside to pick up some things so while there were a few looker-on'rs, it didn't bother me much.

Thank you Chisel, your entry was beautiful and I have to ask about the composition - did you set it up that way purposefully with the big wheel in front of the other?Nope, just a pile of things, including the bike and the wheel, in the back of a marble shop in Italy. When I looked at the photo that evening I decided to go back, move a bit of the junk out of the way so the right side of the shot would be better, but the next day I forgot.
Usually in those shops, things stay in the same location for years, getting coated with dust, but when I returned a few months later the bike was gone.
Here's another shot taken in the same shop six months earlier with a G-8. I didn't pose or arrange anything for either of these shops, just tried to find a spot I could stand amongst all the accumulated stuff, to get a reasonable camera angle. The big white rings in this photo are marble; I believe those were the off-cuts (scrap) after they had cut something round out from the middle.

Wow! This catches me completely off guard! Thanks, Carolyn, and congrats to rpolitsr and Kevan. I really didn't expect to be in the running at all this time around...some really great shots posted! The old implement is one I drive past every week, but never really looked at until this week, when I noticed it had wheels on it! I should have titled the picture " IS Works " as there was a sustained wind of about 40 MPH blowing when I stopped to take the picture, and the camera was anything but steady. I have a busy day tomorrow, but will try to get the next one up and running tomorrow night. Now it's time to hit the sack and lay awake all night trying to think of a topic!:D

Weelipeed did it for me, great composition and IMHO a lot more interesting than the obvious pictures of wheels that could have been submitted.
As for my own entry, my PP skills suck, don't look too closely at the right hand side of the wall !!

loved each and everyone which was entered
thank you very much for hosting and judging Carolyn
terrific choices
and thank you for taking time out especially with baby and older sister needing attention
I feel for the host always when 3 have to be chosen from lots of lovely pictures
Oh Marie, these poor wee bikes, wherever did you find them? Love way even the wheelie bin wheel sneaked into the frame!
they were outside a (now deserted) old Army house, but the bikes look to be in fairly good condition. I think some of the houses are still occupied (for another while) (?) ......hence the wheelie bin ?
or maybe its 'specially for 'any ole iron'
lol
thanks Carolyn

Thanks for the kind words, Marie. I hope that someday my eye for composition will be half as good as yours. That would be about the best I could hope for!:) Also, Thank you Carolyn for hosting and judging this week. It's a tough job, and takes time...something usually in very short supply for Mom's with babies!

:)I do the rare memorial (I'm finishing up one now, for Mt. Auburn in Cambridge, Mass) but generally I stick with architecural and sculptural work. Cemeteries in the states have too many commercial restrictions and limitations on what they allow, not like the range permitted in the old European cemeteries. (and therefore, American cemeteries aren't as photogenic as the European ones).
As an example of the wonderful old European work, here's one carved 100 years ago, from the cemetery in Genoa:

My apologies for the belated post!
Car, I wish to say thank you for the second place, for the theme, and the comments.
Congratulations Michael and Kevan.
This was a beautiful set of entries followed by an interesting chat and another bunch of pictures almost as interesting as the main challenge.
I posted my picture from archives on Thursday. I knew it was my last chance of participation on this challenge, because on Friday and the weekend there was an Olympic Festival in Quito where one of my sons and a brother of mine participated in Olympic Archery.
I shot lot snapshots as usual, and then, all of a sudden, my Pro1 became the ‘main’ camera documenting the awards. It was almost a catastrophe! A 4 Gigabytes card failed and I was forced to switch from RAW to JPG on the worst moment: The sun was behind the participants and the podium pictures were all in backlight with not enough fill flash. Lightroom made a great work, but I spent three days post-processing the pictures.

Sorry for the off topic pictures. As you see, I changed the wheels for the circular targets this weekend.
