View Full Version : Breeze Browser Sharpness Mystery

O.K. "mystery" is probably too strong a word. Here's my situation. I just got back from a family winter vacation. I processed my RAW files (from D60 using a 28-135, 200 f2.8L, and 80 f1.8 ) through Breeze Browser as usual. My usual workflow is Camera->BB->LinearTIFF16->PS7(LPBatch).
I got to playing with Breeze Browser and tried the "display in high quality" for my RAW files. I was really impressed with the sharpness. I wasn't able to duplicate it by hand in PhotoShop.
Does anyone know the photoshop equivalent recipe for the Breeze Browser "high quality" RAW preview? Say starting either with a linear conveted Tiff16 or a non linear Tiff? I saw on Chris Breeze's site a suggested usm setting, but no more details.
I know that this is technically a software question, but optimal image post processing seems to be camera specific, so I'm asking here.
thanks

Posted the same question on Fred Miranda some time ago, but can't find the tread. Any way, the answer is NO. My pictures are still brighter and sharper in BB, which will lead to oversharpening while editing in PS.
Chris from BB confirmed the difference.
Now I only view in medium quality.
I'm sure more people have noticed this and may be there will be a solution in the future.

Have you tried either Pekka's own Linear Sharpen [1] or Roger Cavanagh's update (Linear Sharpen Menu) [2]? I find that I get the sharpest results from these conversions. I own Fred's LP Batch and the latest CS Pro for my D30, but as long as I'm willing to wait for LSM, I get better results.
LSM works best with Photoshop 7, but can also be used well with Photoshop 6.

Does anyone know if Pekka's Linear Sharpen 3.42 will work with a Canon D 60?
Thanks,

Bill,
Pekka has written a linear conversion action specifically for the D60. See his link above.

I guess my suggestions weren't worth much to you. I missed that you were using a D60. Sorry about that.
I see that Pekka has pointed out his D60 beta action.

Thanks very much to everyone for the tips. Have
downloaded Pekka's beta action and will look
at LSM. I'll try to report back as time permits.
Of course, all this has only made me more curious. Just what happens in BB that can't be done in Photoshop with a linear 16-bit tiff?
Thanks

I wondered the same thing as you and wrote to Chris Breeze about it last year. Here is his reply:
"The large image is a JPEG which was embedded in the raw file by the camera
when the photo was taken. I think it is very similar to what you would get
if you converted the raw file using the "As Shot" settings.
The reason it appears different in Photoshop 6 is probably due to deifferent
color spaces. Canon don't say what color space the camera uses but it
appears to be very similar to sRGB. If you load this into PS with the
default color space of Adobe RGB the shot will probably look a bit dull. You
could try converting it from sRGB to Adobe RGB and see if that helps. I
don't have a copy of PS6 and so I haven't been able to try this but when I
load my shots into Paint Shop Pro 7 they look the same as they do in
BreezeBrowser.
I hope this helps,
Chris"
