View Full Version : Going off topic, hijacking threads........

justaf IREMAN

......posting the same exact answer or comment as the last reply, ^^^^^^^+1, ^^^^^^^^+2........ so on and so forth.

I notice a lot of this goes on in this forum. I'll click on a thread sometimes to find the answer to a similar question that I have and end up wasting my time reading page after page of BS. Or the thread goes off into a totally different direction because somebody hijacked it with a different question and the original question never gets answered.

I know that the guys and gals are just having some fun sometimes with their replies, but can a "NO HIJACKING" rule be implemented at least.

let me have it,..... what are your thoughts?

No problem. So...what? 24-70? :)

Yeah it's on every forum. Lots of side conversations, tangents, "I like this", or "I agree". It's just a fact of Internet life.

Can't be controlled much unless a mod checks every thread and that's not practical. Some of it is about having fun, and some of it is about uping post counts. It's just the nature of the on-line forums.

BTW, I went with the 24-105. Range over speed :D

If they aren't going to read/follow the rules about posting size limits, using the search function, for sale rules, why in the heck do you think they're going to follow this stupid rule? I'd rather see someone actually do a search for what they want rather than posting the same dang question 100 times.

I'll mainly be shooting sports, macro, landscapes, birding, wildlife, portraits, urban street, fashion, architecture, and ducks.

I got the 24-70 just the other day. The 24-105's range is extremely tempting, but I really really like f/2.8 and the focusing speed of the 24-70. Beautiful lens.

But the 24-70's lack of range is making me lust after the 70-200mm. But which one? f/4 or f/2.8?? IS or non-IS??

Jon
20th of May 2009 (Wed), 13:01
2.8 IS - you've already got the 100-400 for the IS and f/4 between 100-200 mm.

:{)#

Actually, I sold my 24-105 after I got the 28-300 L, since that baby removed my last reason (the gap between 70-105 mm and 0.4-1.4 m distance) for keeping both that and the 24-70/70-200 combo.

I was wondering when the 90D will be released? I've got a 40D but don't want a 50D and the 60D has a funny ring to it. I wouldn't buy a 70D because my cat was hit by a car '70' yards away from my house, The 80D will just be a 70D with a couple of extra ISO settings, But I have read on 'the internet' that the 90D will be worth waiting for. Has anyone any idea how much it will be and how many mega pixels it will have?

/somewhat agree with OP

people hijacking threads are almost as annoying as those who say use search, or use google. I actually think they might be one and the same though.

If everyone were to search or google every question they had, there would be community. What possible questions that can be asked haven't been asked before?

So, because people are too lazy to click "search" and type in a few words, we should do it for them? I will grant that sometimes it really depends on what words you search for. However, a lot of people just ask a question and don't realize that it's been answered ad nauseum. Perhaps that's why there's a "Similar Threads" section at the bottom of most pages.

The more precise you can make your query the less overwhelming the response you'll get. Searching all of POTN for "40D" would be impossible. Searching in the EOS Cameras Forum (yes, you can do that) for "40D Live View" would yield a much more reasonable list of possibilities. It may help (although it'd mean more hits) to search the bodies of posts, not just thread titles.

Not to Hijack this thread but..

Hijacking is only of issue to those that take offense to the OT. posts,.

Usually even in a thread that has veered O.T., the original thread subject goes on to those interested in it, and one can read and reply to the OP's subject.
Feel free to ignore O.T. posts, but often the discussion that ensues is important to those participating and thus no reason to quell it.

When it is necessary, we can "split" discussions that go far afield, but it's not "policy" to do so.

Discerning what entails a hijack vs. a valid segue, and the fact that most often an O.T. post is all in good fun and hardly intended to contain malice,. are reasons why we would not be likely to try to write and enforce a hard "no hijacking" rule.

It's just not a reasonable or functional thing to crack down on.

Rather, POTN tries to enforce the rules regarding courtesy and behavior.. intent.

One form of "Hijack" we do tend to enforce when reported, are thread hijacks in the share forums... ie; I post an image of a flower, and someone comes along and says "mines better, let me show you" .. this one is common courtesy.

It's not necessarily the thinking "we should do it for them". What I am saying is is impolite and rude to constantly have that done when people come to a community(forum) to ask a question. The ones that chose to say "use search" or "google it!" should just not comment at all. But, I do understand that by doing so, it is an easy way to bump up their post count. The "search bully's" should just not respond at all..

That is what I meant by the people who say use search are just as bad as the hijackers, because in actuality, they are hijackers themselves. Nobody forced them to comment in the thread.

But, yes the similar threads is a nice feature at times. Although there are occasions where I use search to find something only to see reply's like "use search", "rtfm", "google it!" etc..

If you don't want to answer a question, then not just common courtesy, but forum rules will tell you to say nothing rather than tell the questioner to do a search, or RTFM, or otherwise suggest that they shouldn't be wasting your valuable time by asking for an explanation of something that has them baffled.

Its like social conversation which is seldom linear, ideas branch out - develop, move on to new subjects, personally I love much of this because it often brings me to new discovery, entertainment and intrigue. When a person simply must have a serious answer, they can repeat that concern but if someone really wants to answer a question precisely, they can do that with free will.

The question is raised by the OP, if we go there to research the same subject then we get out of it what we bring to the party, if I only want to be an observer and expect people to follow what I think the rules should be, I'm unlikely to get either result.

I may have this wrong, it was a while ago but someone posting in the lens section got mad and wanted people to not either talk about lenses or post pictures from those lenses, I cannot remember which but they thought whoever did one of those were very wrong and such actions should be restricted.

But in real life I have several friends who are so left brained that all that is pertinent to these few minutes of conversation is what they want to talk about. Hmmmm, I should say I had a few friends like that lol, it wasn't interesting, I don't talk to them anymore so we both got the best of the situation, they can find people who only want precise agreement and response to what they want to talk about.

People are different, so we all view the function of conversations differently. Its been said that 86% of all questions are an answer in disguise, looking for support and confirmation but not a quest for new information. I was startled when I first read that but started paying closer attention to question oriented conversations and realized many of them are actually a way of starting a confrontation and the many are very thrilled to be able to start controversy, it's how they get their juices going, it's all very fascinating, none of it's wrong, it's how we communicate.

Most times I will tell them to search for the question and then point out the "Similar Threads" portion of the page. Most new people don't know it's there because it's at the very bottom of the page. So, yes, I do tell them to search for the answer, but also give productive advice.

re: starting new threads vs continuing old threads

This is just my experience only, but I have found that resurrecting old threads gets very little attention, and that if I want an answer or some decent feedback, I have no choice but to start a new thread because then people are all over it.

YMMV

With the used price of the MkII these days it's a tough call unless your budget dictates the choice for you,..

MkII Vs. MkIII AF:
Between the two IMHO it's a practical wash..
The MkIII had many supposed AF improvements engineered into it,. however at launch and for over a year thereafter it was plagued with issues that prevented it taking the AF crown from the MkII.
After over a year of dealing with this and finally getting a replacement camera from Canon, I find though my new MkIII AF is at long last is excellent, however I can find no concrete evidence that it is in fact any better for Birding than the MkII. Easily Just as good, but not in a league of it's own.

MkII Vs. MkIIIfor high ISO noise handling:
This is a different story. If you need to shoot low light or simply high ISO for faster shutters, the MkIII is a significant improvement on the mkII.
Further, image quality and color are simply better all around.
One can happily shoot ISO 800 on the MKIII and compare that to ISO 400 or lower files fro the MkII. Further, the higher ISO MkIII files up to 1600 clean up amazingly well with a good NR software plugin.. resulting in images that look like they were taken again t ISO 400 or so on a mkII.
Again the overall IQ is simply stunning.

Ergonomics and Control:
The MkIII again wins in a colossal lead. Going all the way back to Canon first consumer DSLR, the D30 3MP, and there first Pro DSLR, the 1D 4.5MP, Canon was using two entirely different menu systems and control layout. While the D30 evolved to the D60, 10D and 20D, Canon made substantial improvements in the intuitive nature of the menu system. Meanwhile the MkII and MkIIn came out with virtually no change from the menu structure of the the original 1D, in fact, the 1D borrowed it;s own digital menu system from the earlier Eos 1V film systems,. to make the switch for pros from the 35mm to Digital "easier"
What this results in is an archaic menu structure, that is cumbersome and time consuming to use.

Consumer lever 10D-50D menu system = excellent,
1D-1D MkIIn.. = not so good

With the MkIII Canon combined the best of each and made it even better.
In use the MkIII is a huge improvement. Here the MkIII hits it out of the park.

The decision:
Given the cost of a used MkII, it's hard to make this decision. You are guaranteed one of the fastest focusing cameras ever made, with the longest and best track record for fast action birds, sports etc. at rock bottom price.

MkIII adds to that the negative of flaky AF on some bodies, along with the better IQ and far better ease of use.

Hope this all helps.
