the brightest area (the water surface to the left of the car) seems unchanged in the 2 images... so surely you could just have brought up the exposure in the original RAW to get the same effect but using a single image? or if it was shot as a JPEG just try adjusting levels. It doesn't look like you actually lost any detail in the shadows in the original image except under the car.

Actually, the original looks more realistic... the shadow under the car in the HDR version looks strange.

Not realy needed just experimenting. Got the idea from a guy on flickr who does landscapes with 5 exposures and very toned down processing. Maybe I'll try this one again with lower strength and processing
