It's more likely when you're on, with cable. You're sharing bandwidth with the rest of your neighborhood - if they're all asleep or away, you'll get fast connections. If not . . . .

First check your speed from here:
http://www.speedtest.net/
Make a note of the results.
Turn off your modem/router. Turn off your computer.
Take out, then put back all the leads into their correct sockets.
Turn on your modem/router. Turn on your computer.
When everything is settled, do the speedtest again and note your results.
This usually works - good luck.
Oh! and welcome to POTN.

Your ISP is slow. You are probably on their lowest tier of service. My upload speed was the same until my ISP upgraded their system and moved up everyone's upload speeds. I'm now around 1Mb/s, but I could pay more for 5Mb/s if I wanted to. I just haven't seen the need to do so.

"I pay about 30 euro per month for 100/10 mbit, the actual results was posted a few posts ago but it's about 150 down and 8 up so I don't have much to complain about"
Interesting....Thanks abaway, for the idea of posting "How Much we pay for these speeds:)"
I'm in Alaska, and make my mortgage shooting video...as well as local audio production. I could really benefit from some of these upload speeds many of you have been posting. I'm not at home for a test, but the 8mg down/Half meg up package is $50....the next step is 12 down, 1 up at $100/month! I actually JUST signed up for that package as they are offering a "$40 off" special for the 12/1 package, for a total of $60/month. We don't have the option for anything faster, and I'm assuming that's a bandwidth limitation governed by the local ISP...and to a further extent, how much bandwidth they actually have available.
I was just in Vegas visiting the In-Laws a month or so ago...and being the Certified Family "Geek", I was asked my Mom-In-Law to take a look at the computer...the internet seemed to be running slow. She's an AOL (Only) user, so that ended up being her issue (The computer was the bottleneck)...on her Comcast account...at $20/month, on IE, her speeds on speedtest.net were close to 30megs down and 2.5-5 megs up...depending on the time of the day...FASCINATING to me! I had NEVER seen those speeds register on speedtest...and only thought those speeds were possible on T-1s, in Universities, The Pentagon, etc>:) How naive I am...
For those of you with slower speeds...in the middle American states that have posted...South Dakota, Wyoming, et al....do you have the "choice" for faster speeds? Do your local ISP's offer it? Is it expensive?
This is a great thread! Definitely an eye opener...speeds as fast as some of you are posting must mean instantaneous web page loading, flawless HD streaming, incredibly fast downloads...even uploads for that matter! I'm Really, Really Jealous!
Thanks everyone for sharing!

As I live in Sweden it's possibly different here than other countries but internet is quite cheap here compared to other countries outside of Europe, within Europe it appears to be generally the same.
I pay 30 euro which is about 40 US dollar and it's very rare that it ever cost more than that and that's for 100 mbit which also is the fastest connection you can get here. But you won't have any trouble if you just pay for 10 mbit with things like streaming in HD and such.

Would be nice. We're on Orcons own exchange in a shared cabinet, but everything still uses Telecom copper.
Its actually faster with Orcon than it was with Xtra though. The speed is ok, its the high latency that annoys me, I'm still trying to convince chorus, through Orcon, that there is something wrong with the line/connection.

Anyone understand what the "server distance" is all about? It is clearly NOT the real distance from my PC in Salisbury to Birmingham, which it seems to claim is 50mi (miles?) and is clearly much more than that.

I would assume it is how far the data travels one way, not just a straight shot from point A to point B.
Here's mine:

The distance is not measured by your computer and to the test server. It's between server stations in your area to the test server so it's not a straight line at all. Keep in mind that the closest server station may not be near where you live and therefore the distance won't be correct.
Also be aware of that the closer you live to a server station the faster connection you will have but there are exceptions. It depends on what type of connection you have, how the ISP handle the data sent and how busy the test server is.
The distance at Speedtest isn't something you should care about, select the server that is closest to you. Only care about the ping value, the lower the better if you are worried about instability of your connection.

Pretty good... Bell Rural Wireless. We are at the very limit of the tower's throw. Receiver is mounted on the deck railing 'looking' out under a tree in the yard. When a train goes by the net 'stalls' but rarely disconnects. Not a whole lot of choices out where we are.
