I'm having a bit of an issue with my new EOS 20D, and I'd like some input before I send it out for service. First, I've been extremely satisfied with the camera so far. The quality of my photos is excellent and control of the camera is a breeze. However, having shot most of my photos thus far in Program AE mode, I was unaware until yesterday of a problem with manual control.
When I attempt to adjust anything with the main control dial by the shutter release, it only works in a decreasing direction. That is, from 1/125 Tv value, I can go to 1/100 (and so on) but not back the other direction. The same thing happens in Aperture priority and Manual mode. Similarly, scrolling through the menus is plagued by this one-directional movement. (The quick-control dial on the back is in perfect working order, though.)
Right at the moment, I'm kicking myself for not realizing this in time to send it back to 17th St. Photo for a return; I'll have to send it out to Canon for a repair.

Is this a problem anyone else has experienced? Is this a software issue or a hardware issue? Help, please. I'm at my wit's end.

Sorry to hear about your trouble, leon ... since the dial on the back works fine it sounds like a hardware issue with your main dial. I have (fortunately) not experienced this problem, nor have I heard of anyone else suffering from this particular malady.

Lucky you, huh? Bummer :(

Never was a problem with mine. I just checked it to make sure and it goes up the f-numbers and down fine. I had old firmware when I bought my camera and have upgraded it twice so it's not obviously related to firmware. I'd get a new one or have it fixed.

Thanks for the input. I feel comfortable sending my camera away to have it fixed, but I worry about the Canon techs using refurbished parts in the fix. But, I guess there's no way around that, so I'll have to live with it. Hate to think I just got a lemon from the start . . .

Before you send it away - Did you remove the memory bty? Remove the reg. bty, the memory bty, count to 27, delete anything on your cf card with your computer, reinstall everything (with fingers crossed) and hope.

The memory and the memory battery have nothing at all to do with the main control dial only going one way. That sounds like a distinct hardware problem to me.

The dial has one switch that detects rotation one way, and it has another switch that detects rotation the other way. It sounds like one switch is failing. It could be something as minor as a dirty switch, but Canon is going to have to figure that one out.
