nifty fifty- 2nd try...C&C

I played around a little more with some different modes using the nifty fifty. I like the shots overall, still I am not quite there, but I am trying! Some areas are still OOF. What is the best distance when using this lens? I guess for just starting out, I am pretty happy with the captures.

It's a great lens isn't it. Especially for the price, it's a steal.. I like the first 2 shots. I think maybe some areas are out of focus because we don't realise how shallow the DOF of 1.8 is. When looking back at my images i take at 1.8, i see that even the front of people's nose's are in perfect focus but the back of the nose isn't... really shallow. Try shooting at 2.8+ and you will get the best from this lens. It is also super sharp at 2.8.

There really isn't a "recommended distance" when using the nifty... really depends on the effect you want to have. If you want a narrow DOF, then get close and shoot open. If you want a little deeper DOF, then back up and close down quite a bit (this may help with focusing, as well, since you would have more DOF to play with). Just make sure that you are far enough away from your subject for the lens to be able to focus. Usually, I try to be about an inch or two farther back from the very minimum distance that the lens can focus, if that makes sense...

I like number 3 except the doll is so close to being cut off. Also try adding some depth to your B&W's. I guarentee it will help tremendously.
