Just looked through a flickr gallery of a 800L user...

Oh dear, let just say he sucks. With a 800L I would assume he knows what he is doing. Most of the shots are blurry and too much noise from pulling up exposure and cropping. Bad lighting. Wrong exposure. He is shooting a 5dmarkII. I almost get the sense that he tries to think he knows what he is doing. With a 800L on a monopod. ISO 200. 200s. F5.6. ??? Yeah, ok. Whatever flows his boat. :cool: Only if he knows why his shots suck that bad......some of the flickr groups are easily impressed though......:cool:

Quality of gear is no indicator of the talent level of the photographer.

I know several people who could make me look awful with just a Rebel and a 50mm f/1.8

I know one person in particular who can make me look really bad .. Me! ;)

(BTW .. Why are you so concerned with what that person posts on Flickr?)

Because I was trying to tell him the best setting to get a sharper picture but he brushes off my comment saying he is trying to develop the skill to shoot at much lower shutter speed...160s with a 800L. I was like....OK. :cool: He wants to think he knows what he is doing...fine by me.

I routinely shoot 1/125 - 1/180 with my 300MM + 2X to get smooth prop blur on aircraft.

It's the subject that dictates the technique and not vice versa.

I am even afraid to tell him his lens is soft and his web view size photos are too compressed causing all sort of artifacts. I don't want to offend him. His other shots are nice though.....except the bird ones.

I understand you are just venting but isn't posting his flickr site a little malicious? Understand also that everybody don't look for what we look for in a photo....Jeff

I guess I don't get the purpose of this thread? I am not trying to be a smart ass, but really, why do you care? If you don't want to offend him by criticizing his work to him directly, what do you hope to accomplish with this? If you hate his work so much, grow a pair, and tell him, hell maybe give him some tips to get better. Threads like this don't help anyone with bird photography and serve no purpose other than making POTN look bad.

And I think someone is just plain jealous. Personally I don't see such terrible work as you claim, a lot of it is quite nice.

So what if he has an 800? That's a damn specialized lens for those who need that much reach. It's most definitely not an everyday lens. Even someone with deep pockets must have some need for such a large and expensive piece of glass. It's hardly something you carry around just to impress people. Maybe consider that before being also critical of this person's choice of lens

I try to learn something *positive* from everyone's work that I look at, maybe you might try that instead of finding things to criticize in someone's work just because you're jealous of the gear that they own.

Like mom always told me, if you can't say something nice..........
