About a year ago I was able to put my G2 down as I got an SLR for a replacement. I thought that I could never get used to a viewfinder since the G2 had that nice swivel LCD for those shoot from the hip action.
So to commemorate this I decided to take a photo of my G2. I think the PowerShot series are great way to learn the essence of photography. Shoot it took me over 7 years to upgrade to something else.

Eeeeeha!
It has been a year and 5 months since I laid my G2 to rest for a G9.
I have never looked back and I absolutely LOVE the G9. Best choice I could have made.
I sold my G2 on Craigslist for . . . . . I forget now, think it was $140.00 I figured I'd best sell it while it was in perfect working condition. I got 6 good years of awesome pictures from it.
G2 was my first digital camera. I held onto my Minolta X-700 for a LONG time. In fact, I still have it. I paid so much money for it in 1981 that I can't bear to part with it and the huge pile of lenses, flashes, filters and other stuff I have for it.
Yeah, I put down my G2 but it is a good thing.
Would I like DSLR? Yes, But the G9 fits in a pocket. Try that with a dslr.
But man do I ever miss that swivel screen.

I used my G2 for well over 4 yrs and 15,000 shots... of all my many Canon "belt/pocket" cameras over the years, it is still the one that took the best photos under any conditions. I own a G7 now and used a buddy's G9, but you have to really work to get decent photos out of them, IMHO, whereas the G2 was a supreme P&S camera that simply worked all the time and took great photos.
The camera finally died a very unsubtle death: I put in a fresh battery one day while on a boat in the Mekong River in Thailand (and no, it did not go swimming that day!), and when I powered it up, I heard a sharp electrical crackle and smoke started rolling out of the guts... not a good sign. The Canon Service Center guys in Bangkok opened it up, and the main circuit board had fried itself and anything it touched - totally DOA.

I couldn't agree more. I have owned a G2 and G3 in the past. I miss them both.

I've gone the other way...after taking a few shots with my "new" G3, I sold my XT.
I figure that the XT would require at least 2 lenses to give me the options that the G3's "35-135" F2-3 range has....I had kept the XT after getting the 30D as my compact "walkabout/travel" camera kit...but the G3 serves that purpose better.

Funny thing is now that I have sold my 40D so to remember my SLR I took a picture of it with the G2

Looks like I'll be back with my G2 for a bit.

Small world, sold my entire SLR kit today: Gripped XT and Canon lenses and bought a G3. I'm still keeping my MF lenses, though ;)
I just wasn't using the SLR much and got a chance to play with a P&S recently and found it much more convenient. That and I've been seeing prices drop like a rock on these things, and cued me to get rid of it.
It was my first dSLR and it will be missed. I may be itching to for a 1d in a year or so! :D

How's this for an odd thought...the G3's slow shutter response time makes it less suited for grab "snap" shots at family gatherings and parties than the SLR...the G3's better for deliberate studies...
I took my 40D and 70-210 to a Father's day/birthday party set the cam for ISO 1000/sRAW (indoor lighting needs it, of course) and just shot away from across the room...and got great reaction snap shots even at 1/40 sec. that I wouldn't have gotten with the G, or any PnS......

The problem is people kind of freak out when they see a big dslr at a party..

remember, I said...
"...just shot away from across the room..."
also...shooting others' reactions to OTHER photographers...
Here are some examples...all shot between 1/25 and 1/50 second with my "new" 70-210/3.5-4.5...perfectly fine for the occasion...

With my Mark III at Canon getting the sub mirror replaced I find myself still using my G2 for photos.

I have an ancient early or first generation G2 from 10 years ago. Despite repeated falls, it still performs well. It replaced an AE-1. Brand loyalty eh? The issue is the file extension that comes in movie modei.e., .THM While I can play the movies the G2 makes with Picasa and with Windows Media Player on my own computer, when I test to send them to myself through Hotmail, they will not open.
Question: can a .THM file be changed to one that anyone can open with today's softwere options?
thanks, jayoh

I think if you open it up in Windows Movie Maker and save it from there as a WMV it will be a more modern filetype.

That's a damn sexy camera; I think I want one now just for fun.
(I just read that thing had a street price of $900 in 2001!)
