A while back I mentioned that I handled a White Tailed Sea Eagle - well I just got round to scanning the photo. I have no idea what camera this was taken with - not mine anyway.

This is a juvenile and was rescued from a 'collector' and is about 2/3 grown. It is wearing a hood to stop it getting spooked. These are very rare birds in the UK - about 10 pairs.

PS For US forum members - that is a Portland Timbers hat I am wearing! :)

They've got a 8/9 foot wingspan. Look like flying doors when they get going.

I wouldn't want to go head to head with the beak - put it that way!

It was surprisingly light, although when the photo was taken it started flapping and almost lifted me off the gorund!

My arm was OK - but the gloves took a bit of a beating! :)

I saw a female White Tailed Sea Eagle in Fota Wildlife Park in Cork (Ireland) only last week, unforntuantely they became extinct in the wild here in the 60's, but a pair has been re-introduced into Kerry. The poor bird I saw was 25 years old and living a solitary life while they tried to find a suitable mate. She had a massive avariary but I still imagine see must be bored. If they find a mate, she probably would not know what to do at this stage! One huge bird.

Thay have been reintroduced into Scotland.

I was speaking to an RSPB officer the other week and last summer he saw a juvenile bird in Lancashire. It is believed that it was ranging away from 'home' in Scotland looking for a new territory. 250 miles away!! They reckon it got that far and then turned back!

Don't blame him, its a long way to bring the kids back to see the grand parents on Sundays!

Seriously though, what weight was the bird, he looks huge, but you seem to be holding him (her) with ease.

What can I say - I'm a he-man and the spinach works!

I would guess she weighed about 6/7kg as their full grown weight is about 9kg.
