I'm surprised no one else has responded. Here's my take on it.
It depends on what you want/expect from your camera kit. Since your G6 had an articulating LCD, you would most likely prefer the SX1 over the G10 for that feature. I moved from a Canon A620 with an articulating LCD, and missed it (still do) on my G9.
The G6 zoom range was 35 - 140 mm equiv, and the G10 is 28 - 140 mm equiv., so you would expand your range to the wide end, which most prefer. Lots of others have complained that the G10 max tele is too short, so they will try to add a tele converter. This makes the camera heavier and less convenient, because of the add-on converter tube plus the lens. Also, more to pack in a camera bag. The SX1 has a huge zoom range; 28 -560 mm equiv., so you won't need add-on lenses, and a larger bag, except for perhaps an external flash and tripod.
The G10 is more compact than the SX1, so you might want to keep your kit smaller, and not be concerned about add-on lenses. Both cameras offer RAW shooting, but the G10 image sensor is larger (as are the megapixels), and may provide higher quality results. However, looking at comparison shots on the DCR reviews for both cameras do not look that much different to me. Here's the SX1 (http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3974&review=canon+powershot+sx1) review, and here is the G10 (http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3775)review.
If you are in to HD video recording, the the SX1 is the model you will want, since the G10 does not offer it.
These are just my observations. If I had to decide between the two, I would probably get the G10, because I prefer the smaller size, and perceived higher quality of the G10.

I'd get a g10 or a DSLR.. the SX1 wouldn't even be on my list.. too big for what you get...

The SX1 is overpriced IMHO. The only real difference between it and the SX10 is the HD video recording and if that's your priority, buy an HD video camera, not a digital still camera. The G10 would be my vote.
