View Full Version : How many use a G series camera without a lens adaptor?

I've had a G1 for years complete with lens adaptor, UV filter on all the time, plus other filters. It works fine but I have to carry it all in a case so am thinking of getting a smaller setup.
I'm thinking of a bare G6 - no adaptor - since it does have a ND filter built in - right? How many of you use their G series just "as is" and find it OK?
I'm also looking at the A95 since I really need a swing out LCD.

Used the G2 with a lens adapter mainly to use conversion lenses.
However, didn't like the bulk of the camera with the adapter.
When I got my 20D, I sold off adapter and conversion lenses on eBay and kept the G2 as light travel camera.
Still, have to admit that it didn't get much use since buying the 20D
Best regards,
Andy

I have the adapter and filters but I've never used them. I use the Canon lens hood, which uses a different adaptor. One nice thing about this setup is that you can use the standard lens cover on the end of the hood adaptor. And when you accidentally turn the camera on before you remove the cover, the lens doesn't push it off and make you look like an idiot. Of course, the LCD is VERY dark. The lens hood also makes the camera look bigger and more impressive. :)

i dont have any adapters for my g6, and my pictures turn out ok. i probably should buy a uv filter and a hood though.

The lens adapter is not necessary for you to use your G6. It is just nice to have front protection of your lens and zooming mechanism, and also for using different attachments. I do admit that putting an 52mm adapter on my G3 makes the camera more bulky and more awkward to carry.

Hi Teekay, ALL my photos taken with my G-5 are sans any adapter or filter, other than the built in ND filter, and I've been quite happy with most of the shots from it. :D

Sounds like I'm in the minority, but I use an adapter quite a bit on my G6. I tend towards outdoor photography, and I often use a polarizer. However, I use my camera often enough without add-ons that I don't actually store my camera with the adapter mounted. I did find that bags that were small enough for the camera alone weren't as comfortable as wider bags that had room for the adapter and filters. The added weight is minimal, but the wider bag is much more stable against my torso. I found the little bag swung and slid around, banging into my arms while walking, etc. I think the small bag is much more like a cylinder, so it's very easy for it to "roll" against me, where the wide bag just hugs where it sits, and I can almost forget about it.
That could all be just the bag I had--go to a LCS with a wide variety of bags, and try your G1 without accesories in them--it should be a good substitution for a bare G6. Walk around. Bend over and tie your shoes. Does the bag slide around and smack into the floor? That's bad. Adding a belt strap to the shoulder strap would prevent this, but I found that cumbersome--try it though, might work for you!

I just like the way the G6 feels with an adapter (lensmate 52mm). Without the adapter I always feel like I'm going to drop it. With the adapter I can rest the G6 in the palm of my left hand and wrap my fingers around the adapter, the same method I use to hold a SLR.
As for the A95, I bought one for my wife and it's a great little camera. If it had RAW capabilities, I may have bought one for myself as well. The built-in flash on my wife's A95 is far superior to my G6's, a fact that I find a little irritating!

Ditto for me (G5 with lensmate 52mm) . It just feels more secure in my big hands.
Plus, I always have a C-Polarizer filter on it for outside shots. I also purchased a UV filter, but I never use it.

I have the 58mm adaptor. It's on pretty much all of the time. I like to keep it on for protection. Oh, BTW it's a G3

....As for the A95, I bought one for my wife and it's a great little camera...
My wife bought an A75 a few months ago and even without the swing LCD I find it has many advanced features over my G1 and that's what prompted me to start this thread as it's a camera that one can carry unobtrusively one's belt everywhere. As I assume one can with the "out of the box" G6.
I do use polarizing and ND filters on my G1 occasionally but have concluded that I have lost more good shots than I have gained, because the camera with adaptor etc. wasn't with me at all times - too bulky.
Anyway, thanks to all who replied :-)

I bought the G6 to have a compact camera with great capabilties always in my carry bag. Using an adapter defeats that purpose. I keep the G6 in a small case and a 420ex next to it.

I always use a filter adapter (52mm), it protects the fragile lens, and it's got hit a few times.. hits which could have damaged the lens, but only resulted in a few scratches on the adapter. It feels a lot more secure with the filter and adapter.

Most of the time I use my G6 without any add-ons, but in some cases, when taking a landscape photo or a sunset photo, I use my add-ons...other than that it is perfect without them.

I have a 58mm canon adapter with UV filter... it feels better to have it on all the time... the problem is when I take pictures that needs flash.. it blocks the built in flash..So, if u have an adapter, consider buying an external flash.. which i am seriously considering now..
