Hi All,
I've been a member for quite some time now. I've been trying to learn as much as possible from some of the talented folks on this forum. This is the first time I have had the nerve to post a picture. I'd love to hear your comments.
Here are two pictures of my 5 month old nephew.

What lens? They seem a bit soft.

The pictures are very cute, but they appear not to be in focus. I too am curious which lens. Are you using manual focus? Were you focusing on his eyes?

I used a 50m at 1.8 with natural light. I'm not sure I understand what "soft" means. Do you mean it's not sharp?

The camera was on automatic focus. How could I have done this better?

Yes, soft would translate as "not perfectly sharp". You may have explained the problem when you mentioned these were taken at 1.8 with the Canon 50mm 1.8. That lens is an incredible bargain when you consider its price, but it has a reputation as being "soft" when shot wide open at 1.8. If you were to take similar shots at 2.8, you'd see an improvement in sharpness. You'd have even more sharpness at 4.0. When you get away from 1.8, it become a lens with high image quality. Also, were you focusing on his eyes? You should be.
Your idea to use natural light is perfect. Babies look beautiful in this kind of lighting. Take a quick look at Photozone's rating of your lens. The resolution chart will show much higher image quality at 2.8 over 1.8.
